Ok, bad news... this is DIY
1. Order joypad(s) from here: ($4.55 USD including shipping world wide ~ 3.5 EUR)
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.30530
Here is picture of the device:
2. Open the 5 screws behind the device (very small Phillips screws)
Inside the device there is 9 wires connected to circuit board These wires connect to DB9F connector in following order: (from pin 1 to 9) Red, White, Brown, Yellow, Blue, Black, Grey, Orange, Green.
I'm going to call these soldering pads with numbers 1-9 from left to right (When you look ship side so that the texts are right way around and pads away from you) The colors from left to right are: Gray, Blue, Brown, Yellow, Black, Green, Red, White, Orange.
3. Disconnect grey (pad 1), green (pad 6) and orange (pad 9) wires
4. Connect gray wire to pad 6
5. Connect green wire to pad 9
6. Cut the orange wire so that it can't contact anything
7. Use the cutted part of orange wire to connect pads 1 & 2 together
Result should look something like this:
8. Put the device back together (Look that the joystick cable goes right way... one side is round, other side is not)
Ta-daa!
Now button "B" is MSX button "A" and button "C" is MSX button "B" (Other extra buttons are not in use)

Cool. How does it handle/react playing games?

Well... could be worse, could be better... I would rate this "ok" Feels cheap compared to modern gamepads but compared to native MSX-controllers this is good... Actually this feels kind of native MSX-controller just because of this...
Here is picture of 6-button mod:

B=A
C=B

6-button mod: Connect even and odd lines together with each other as in picture. (3 + 3 solder points)

Now do the same with a Telemach-like joystick and you will be my hero! |

Here are a bit better pictures about the 6-button mod:

I don't think Telemach has any electronics inside, so it is just matter of connecting the wires. (Look MSX FAQ for pin descriptions) This was not quite so obvious because of the custom chip, so I decited to make instructions. I think moving 2-3 wires in Telemach is also enough. |

I meant adapting modern Telemach-like controllers to be used on MSX. Indeed the original Telemach was very easy to adapt for other systems, I remember the bundled instruction manual itself detailing how to do it for various systems (for MSX it worked out of the box, anyway). |

How big this controller actually is? I thought about getting one, but in the screens on DX it looked so small...
LOL, just bought one, alongside with a USB floppy drive... let's see how long will it take to arrive |

Some of you, who tested this controller on Nijmegen might want to tell something about the quality? (This was connected to my OCM) I think this is ok, but second opinion is always good to have...

Instead o modding, there's a better way of using MegaDrive/Genesis joypads on the MSX: Just build the joymega adapter linked below. The good news is that all the 8 buttons will be available to the programmer, so new software may even start supporting this joypads.
As you can see, the article is even translated in 3 languages.

Ah, someone has already thought about this. I was going to write something like this next.
Quote:
| by default the joystick will give the status of all the directional buttons and the buttons A and C as trigger 1 and 2.
|
This is incorrect... It should be "buttons B and C"
I was thinking about this as well and I must say that I really don't like the fact that the pin needs to be inverted for compatibility mode. Adding a chip inside usually means that you need to go to shop. To be realistic: As long as there is no software for more than 2-button joystics I think that making this easy mod that requires only soldering iron is better option for common users... expetially when the needed connectors + chip here costs more than the controller it self.

Just bought 3 of these pads and did this mod. I think this is the best pad that I have tested with msx! Works like a dream and it's accurate enough.
