MSXDirect web developers and help needed

Hi everyone. I hope this is not an off-topic. Sorry if it is.

My name is Jason Eames and I'm looking for some one to give me a hand on making a new version of my MSXDirect site. I would like to transform it in to something more attractive with many more features (forums, voting polls, news, more ranks and statistics... etc etc). MSXDirect is one of the most visited sites in the world regarding MSX (probably the most visited after http://www.msx.org). It has around 400 unique visitors a day and around 1000 daily downloads. All this traffic can be used to make the number one MSX site in the world (with the permission of msx.org, of course!).

What is needed? -Well, just like most of us, I'm really time-limited. Besides I am not a coder, so some large coding work is out of my possibilities. So, any help is welcome, but what is most urgent is:

  • ASP coder (ASPX is also welcome)
  • Content manager/s
  • ROM searchers and testers

Right now the site works under IIS 5.0, with standard ASP pages and a Microsoft Access database. SQL Server can be available if needed.

What's in return? -Nothing really... just the credits and the satisfaction on keeping the MSX memory live. I intend to keep this site working for ever (or at least until I die).

If you are interested in being part of this new project, please contact me via my website:

Why do you want ROM searchers and testers ??
You've got already a lot of games on you site.

Anyway, nice site you got there

You have a lot of copyrighted material on your site, JEames. The MSX Resource Center Foundation has very strict rules regarding such content. It is not allowed. Although we decided not to alter your forumposting, we do want to state that we cannot be held responsible for any content on remote and/or linked sites. For more info on this, please read our policies.

First of all, the page doesn't even work. I get a nice microsoft error message, saying something about LCID's.

Second, I think it's strange to ask for help on the MRC forum, since your plan is to be competing with MRC for visitors.

Third, MRC currently gets about 2500 visitors per day, has good sources for news and this forum, well... do I need to say anything more?
In stead of trying to copy everything that makes MRC successful, why don't you try something NEW? Like Generation MSX is currently doing. Their new game database is unique and truly adds value to the site. There are lots of new things that can be thought up for an MSX site, be creative!

Fourth, I hope that whatever you do, you will get rid of the downloads of illegal software that currently make up your site. Piracy is not a good way to get visitors and frankly, for a warez site, 400 visitors/day is hardly anything to be proud of.

Well..., first of all, I must say I have 100% respect on MRC's policys about copyrighted software. Yes, my site has ilegal software, but then again it's my decison to do this and I don't see where am I afecting MRC in this maner. I obiousely have a diferent point of view on this, but that does'nt mean we have to be some kind of enemies, right?

If having a direct link to my site has to be a problem we can change the direct link for a seach link on google or something like that. Then again I see that on the MRC link database there's a direct link to Funet, so I guess I'm not that different.

I think that msxDirect has made and is making a good job for all MSX comunity keeping the MSX memory alive. I am no where near MRC, but that doesnt mean I can not try... I think that having a couple or more of sucessfull msx sites make's msx comunity healthier and richer.

Yes; I would like to be more creative and make the site somewhat different thant MRC. My idea is to focus everythin on each game or program. For example: let's say you are intrested in Metal Gear 2: so you go on to MSXDirect, search for it, and find every resource available on that page, including forums, maps, screenshots, tricks ... remakes if avaialble. I'm going to try and focus on this point, but I'm not going to set a limit on that.

About the ROMs and software testers & searchers: there are many more arround than the ones you can find on MSXDirect... some of them in japanise which make's things a bit more complicated. Help in this maner is allways welcome.

I think it's up to the admins&moderators of the MRC to decide wether a topic should be closed or not. And - indeed - we have discussed if this one should. Until now, I see no reason to close this topic apart from the link.

The reason it isn't closed is that JEames isn't (only) making a commercial for his website, but asking for help. However, this doesn't change our point of view on sites containing only or mainly illegal software. They will not appear in our links database or newsposts and direct links to illegal files on our forum are strictly prohibited.

This is not only because we don't like warez, but also because companies like ASCII, MSX Association, Compile/Aiky, Konami, Falcom and others are frequent visitors of our website. We know this because of our server-logs and because of the mails we receive every now and then. One bad move and it could mean the end of the MSX Resource Center and/or the website(s) we refer to. A few weeks ago we had quite a run-in with one of the companies mentioned above and it took us quite some efforts not to get in real trouble. You can ask all you want, you will not receive more details on this one.

So, not linking to warez-sites is not only a matter of principle. It's also a matter of self-protection.

In addition to this, I know what you are going to ask. Funet. This FTP indeed contains illegal material. But not mainly. It also hosts loads of legal MSX software and therefor, we're maintaining it in our MSX links...

Ofcourse it is my opinion. But I believe you search the limit by doing this.

Sunrise, yes, we are. I agree fully with you. We're searching the limit indeed and we think we just didn't cross it...

A reaction to the warez discussion on this (and all msx) forum(s).

If there wasn't any msx warez on the net there would be a few of us
still using the msx or a emulator.
Because of those warez and emulators i re-discoverd the msx a few years ago.
I'm collecting real msx harware and software again.
I know i'm not allone in this matter, i think because of this kind of sites there is
still a msx community left (and still growing). And because of this there is still
a market for new msx products.

NOTE: This is my opinion, NOT a criticism to the MRC.

Except from all this, we still trying to believe in a revival. So, activily making advertisements for sites containing illegal content would do damage to this process.

Let alone initiatives like project EGG, which sells old msx games.

I don´t think your site will last long, because there are truly some Japanese companies who have some amount of interest in the system again.

Indeed, I think your site will do more harm than justice.

Be creative indeed.Because that´s what the MSX about.

I partly agree, and probably so do the companies involved. Which is why these companies are shutting a blind eye, in stead of actively hunting down any MSX warez like Nintendo or Capcom do.
