SD SN. just begs for an attempt from humble sceners to create a game equal in quality and scope.

I mean, in many aspects, the scene coders are superior tot those of the gamecompanies. Graphics shouldn't be much of a problem when it comes to tiles. Tho I haven't seen many sceners who can do those fullsize demo/story frames with top-notch SD or anime. Music.. well, shouldn't really be a major problem I guess.. A story is a matter of using your fantasy and taking your time for it ..

well ... a big competition for 2004 perhaps ? Who makes the scene-game that can rival SD-Snatcher ?

maybe you can do it?

Compjoetania had big plans once to make a cyberpunk RPG called 'Actual Reality': a story based on 'materialized' virtual reality creatures, and thus becoming actual real creatures. (an evil scientist invented a machine to materialize virtual reality objects, blah blah blah...).

We really worked on the story and gamedesign for a while (it would be a 2 player based RPG, where you should simultaniously solve puzzles and independently from eachother at the same time (1 player option would be toggling between the 2 major characters throughout the game)

As I said we already have half a story (prologue and first 2 chapters I think), some maps, weapons, monsters, the bad guy, the good guys, some music even but most of the designs are on paper and Compjoetania ceased to exist due to college and work of most of the members in that period... in other words that project never saw the light of day

IF I ever finish that script though, It'd be a lot easier to develop for PC though (we had SD snatcher based fightscenes in mind, but then in 3D and not turn based) ohh well... so many Idea's so little time

Sounds like a great game!
I bet you would get a lot of respect and people looking forward to this game on MSX, imho on PC it would be 'yet another project'.

It will be a lot easier on MSX, I think. Expectations are a lot higher on pc.

Do you ppl expect an RPG to have a seperate fight-screen (such as sd-snatcher, randar 3, DS6 etc.) or would you also be happy with the xak/zelda method ?

pros of a seperate fightscreen:
- looks nice
- more or less a game within a game
- extra enemies can show up all of a sudden (see sd-sn.) (nice for HP harvesting)

cons are:
- takes a lot of time, w/o the game is faster, esp. when you're just collecting masses of HP etc. without story-progress.
- takes more mem for the gfx
- extra enemies can show up all of a sudden (see sd-sn.) (crap if you're on the edge of being slaughtered)

nice poll question perhaps..

WHy not a combination? Hasn't been done before. I prefer YS-style combats in general... use a separate fight screen for the tough boss monsters.

It's a different genre...
Action oriented RPG's, like Ys, Hydlide, Zelda, etc. are a different genre than Dragonslayer 6, SD-Snatcher, etc.

Personally I would love a good Zelda-like game on MSX! There are a lot of turn-based RPG's on MSX already, a good action oriented one would rule!

there's nothing wrong with mixing genres, you know

Certainly not! Zelda itself is already a mix between an action game and an RPG. (You don't advance levels and collect experience as in a true RPG)
Although currently (in modern console/pc games) it's become a sport to mix genres alot, and the results vary...

I personally like the idea of YS style combat throughout 90% of the game, while the huge boss monsters have a separate fighting system+screen

why?

- The game is easy/fast to play
- You don't need to draw a lot of extra gfx for all enemies.
- You can make boss-monster battles really really really heavy (true: this also happens in YS series )
- It's something different

That's only true when your battle-screen RPG has visible enemies in the normal screen. (So, true for SD-Snatcher, not true for Dragonslayer 6)
