Metal Gear Remake

The copyright laws concerning MSX games, and MSX ROMs is blurry at best and I'd appreciate the help of you find ladies and gentlemen to help me and some of my associates out. The general idea is that we are going to remake, you guessed it, Metal Gear except we're not ripping any of the materials. We're going to be redesigning everything from scratch, and reworking the story into something half-way understandable, at least that's the goal. I just wonder if you'd be so kind as to clarify exactly how far we can go with this. I've read in another topic that Konami has quite strict rules about their copyrights especially those on those titles that are still alive and kicking, in the case Metal Gear. We have no intentions on making any money off of the game, merely make something good better. If you'd be able to provide specefic guidelines on what's able to be done and what's not that'd be great, or some links that make some general comments on the subject. I enjoy the site very much and hope to be seeing more of everyone soon.

If you use any graphics, name, music, sound FX, idea, concept, ... if you use anything that can even remotely connect your game to Metal Gear, then you're screwed.
You would be better off making a totally new game in stead of a remake.

Nahh, you can go quite far in the development of the game, but as soon as there are too many similarities, officially releasing the game would be no option. You can always distribute such a game at a small amateur fair or via anonymous channels on the internet. If you go further, your game might be forbidden.

btw, what's the fun in recreating that game again? we know the storyline, we know the tricks, we know the gaps, we know the artwork and we know the maps.

If you're that lucky to be able to make a complete RPG yourself, consider yourself a happy person, but don't you think it's more fun (for you and for us) to come-up with something entirely new?

Sometimes it is just fun to recreate a game for educational purposes
But you're correct, it is much cooler to make a completely new game...

Now that there's a new MG game, they will be very strict about copyrights.
