Can I use a regular PC power supply in my 8250?

UnregisteredPublicado: Noviembre 09 2003, 18:16
Hi!

Since my trusty NMS 8250 MSX2 falls apart by just looking at it, I started to rebuild the thing in a PC minitower case. Question is, can I use the PC power supply (AT) or do I have to use the original 8250 power supply.

Thanks!

!!!!!!!!warning!!!!!!!!

you can get a hazarous shock!

if you not an engineer ask a friend

or look at msx-faq then you will have a desciption how to connect the pc power supley! it needs to be a at power supley because the new power supleys are controled by a power manegement

Here is a summary of the thread on comp.sys.msx:

Oke,

Remove the power supply from the msx, trafo and print.
Then remove all long objects, bend some and cut some, the bottom has to be
as flat as possible.
The colors from the msx are:

Red=12 volt
Blue=5 volt
Black= 0 volt
yellow= -12 volt

From the PC power supply :

Yellow = 12 volt (connect to Red msx)
Black= 0 volt( twice) connect to Black msx)
Red= 5 volt (connect to Blue msx)
(These wires you can get from a disk drive connector.)

Blue = - 12 volt (connect to Yellow msx)
(this wire comes from the mainboard connector)

Then get the follow wires from the mainboard connector:
Purple = 5 volt VSB ( Voltage Stand By)(max 2 amp)
Green= PS-On ( Power Supply On)
Gray= PWR-Ok ( Power Ok, or Power Good)

Remove the cable from the powerswith from your MSX, Then connect the Purple
cable on one side.
And the Green and Gray on the other.

Purple -----/ switch ------Green and Gray

Then you connect a 220 cord to the power supply and disconnect the connector
from your MSX mainboard.
For a test, you have to put something on the power supply or it wont work.(I
used a old harddisk for load)
Then you put on the power when you press the power button on the msx your
power supply will start.
Now you take a voltmeter and check the voltage on the colors of the msx
power connector.
If the are correct THEN you disconnect the 220 and you connect your msx.
Close it up and try it.

For a good picture of a connector of a PC power supply go to:

Er... I suppose these instructions are for use with an ATX power supply, but I only have an old-fashioned AT power supply (you know, with a real on/off switch), so no green, gray and purple wires I'm affraid.

I imagine I can figure this one out now that I know it's at all possible to use a PC power supply, but just to be on the safe side I'd like to read some instructions on the use of an AT power supply.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate all the contributions you made so far, but I only have one MSX, and although it's just a machine, I've had it for over 16 years and I don't want to blow it up just by connecting the wrong wires...

In the mean time I'll keep looking for more info, of course. I'm not one to sit back and watch while others solve my problems for me. When I find something I'll post it here.

Best regards, and thanks again for your help so far,

Michiel van Leeuwen

I think it should be possible to get that wire voltage info somewhere on the internet for your AT power supply.

Hell! Why not just use a "measuring device"the name escapes me) and measure it

I took a bit of a gamble tonight by connecting my MSX to my AT PSU, and it turned out that the correct wiring scheme for an AT PSU => MSX2 is indeed the following:

Quote:

Yellow = 12 volt (connect to Red msx)
Black= 0 volt( twice) connect to Black msx)
Red= 5 volt (connect to Blue msx)
(These wires you can get from a disk drive connector.)

Blue = - 12 volt (connect to Yellow msx)
(this wire comes from the mainboard connector)

I couldn't find a SCART cable so I have no picture yet, but I put in a gamedisk and it started to load just fine. The keyboard works, the power-led works, no smoke is coming out so I guess I did the right thing.

Now all I have to do is make a lot of cables: cartridge slot, joysticks, tape, floppy, printer and monitor. Oh well, when it's finished I'll have something to be proud of.

Thanks again for all your help!

I haven't got a clue as to what went wrong, but I believe I just blew up the mainboard or something... It won't do a darn thing no matter what I try. No disk activity, no power led, nothing. Bugger bugger bugger.

Oh well, at least I had fun building it into a pc case...

Does anyone here know how much € I'm expected to pay for an NMS 8250 ?

Grtz

Take a look on Ebay.nl and you will find a 8250, or other msx.

It's alive! Mwahahahaaaa! ALIVE! And they said I was mad! Mwahahaha!

Ok, I made a small mistake after putting in the mainboard. I didn't blow anything up, I just forgot to connect some wires. Yes, it's stupid, but there it is. Anyone could make that mistake, ok?

At least I'm not guilty of murder (on this machine anyway). If the wires fit, you must acquit

I'll post some pictures somewhere when I have a finished product.
