I liked the song and am looking forward to future MSX songs from your hand. About it being newspost-worthy. Yes, it certainly is. MRC reports about (nearly) all activity of the MSX Community. Posting about something doesn't mean "this is totally awesome" or "this sucks hard", it just means there's something new for all you MSXers out there. And it's been quite a while since we have seen new Moonblaster Wave songs.

Keep 'em coming, guys!

It's just some people's style, also born partly out of frustration and previous experiences. Ro for example usually is very harsh in his critisism, so it is to be expected. And to be honest, I notice that recently I am becoming less and less polite in things just because some people around are so braindead that they frustrate the hell out of me. I feel less and less inclined to keep on the 'friendly' side while running into a wall of stupidity. And that also leaks through in the rest of my posts.

Ofcourse, again, not about you . Just ousting my frustration for a bit. Anyways, again, don't see the bad in it, but the good! ^_^ As far as I can tell, Ro seems a good guy, he's just sometimes very... expressionate and, er... outspoken.

One thing that bothers me though... Maybe if some people offer ideas for improvement, you shouldn't discard them right away... I mean if this thread isn't opened to get feedback on the song, so that you maybe can improve on it, is it then only intended so that people can give you praise? That would kinda suck, I suggest you put a notification in the message that you will offer a patient ear to positively voiced critisism but discard it right after, which will save me and others the trouble to reply.

More to the point, I thought your song definately has nice elements, but I can not consider it 'good'. Although I am not really an MSX composer, I *do* very much enjoy playing the piano, and have a pretty musical ear, if I say so myself. I can tune a guitar even though I don't really play it, if that convinces you ;p. Now I have tried some MBWAVE stuff in the past aswell, and the bits I made sounded fairly nice in my ears (they really weren't that bad ), but others said that most of them sucked, and in a much more vague manner, without being really specific what the problem was (ofcourse I never really asked for details ;p). The hard part is then not to think 'I know better', but to admit they may be right, and looking at where the problem would then lie and where it could be done better. In my case, if I listen to it now, most of the music was all fairly repetetive, and some instrument choices were also a bit awkward.

In this case, the critisism wasn't aimed particularly at the tune itself (mine wasn't at least ), but merely at the usage of instruments and the OPL4. This device is very different from what a common PC can do with unlimited sized samples and MP3 and filters all, and requires some more finesse in composing than would be nessecary on a PC to make it really sound good and give full sounds. So if people give you some hints, the least you could do is bother to try them out for a bit, and fiddle around somewhat. Because this is definately not the best an OPL4 can sound, and I can also not believe this is the top of your ability.

Wolf's toolbox tip #263

For experienced users: The OPL4 is not something similar to a normal synth, the OPL4 is a 24channel PSG with non-square waveforms. Treat it like a PSG and use the rest to soup things up rather than treat it like a normal synth.

For beginners: the OPL4 (wave) is a 24chn FM-Pac with samples, treat it like a 6-pack, and use the rest as cup-a-soup

ro: As the taste of music is subjective, I don't expect everyone to think the same of it. But what's the use of your mean remarks other than inducing a personal attack ? You could have told your opinion with more respectful words.

Jooneman, let me tell you firsthand "I'm a usefull idiot"

I've considered posting my comment for 2 seconds but thought you deserved the right to my opinion (thaz what it iz, an opinion) and posted it in an almost cursing manner. Well, I really didn't like the tune and don't understand the fuss about it. So be it, don't let this discurrage you... make good use of critisism.
like siad before; itsa public forum, get used to comments.. negative or positive.. either way.

Keep it up, I'm not telling you to quit your exploration in MSX music, and show me wrong!

regards, ro

ps. I'm a musician myself and don't like much music unless it's really good (technically and smoothing) So many crap on the market these days...
(I do play Drums/Percussion, Guitar (6string), Bass (4string), (alt) Sax, working on the keys and do sing some stuff)

Criticism is fine, I didn't come here for only praise. But there's a difference between standard and harsh critcism (the harshness being useless in my eyes), which was my point. Anyway, let's forget about that now; noone's hurt from it. Thanks for the follow-up by the way ro.

The song's concept is very simple, and I think improving it will be too much work for the result. Most of the work would be changing the pattern sizes for more dynamic volume changes (if MBWave supports a volume-slide effect, let me know ).
