The history of the MSX scene

I'd like to categorize scene-ppl or scene-groups into the different scene-periods.. just for the fun of it.. and it's a nice way to sum-up some old names etc,

I think we can divide the whole MSX demo-scene into 4 periods:

- pre-scene

This is the era when the first public domain articles showed up in MSX Computer Magazine for example. Also, I remember some SCC-players from that era. I don't think you could've called it a 'scene' back then .. it was growing ofcourse, but it was still kinda new and strange.

- early scene

I personally see this as the beginning of the structured scene.. think Genic Picturedisk for example.

- main scene

Personally I see the change between the early-scene and main-scene somewhere around the switch from Genic to Sunrise, as some of the older groups were not active anymore, and many new ones popped-up regulary. I think this scene went on to excist until the start of the silent years and until the moment the big Zandvoort/Tilburg fairs weren't being held in the traditional big sporthalls anymore.

- revival years

That's where we are right now, some of the older ppl/groups are still around, but new ones also joined the scene.

The question is ofcourse whether the silent years are a scene-period as well .. dunno. I wouldn't mind adding a 5th category, but I don't think much happened in that period.

So, what's next..? I'd like to fit individual people (if they were indies) and groups into these time-periods. So, if you know you were active in a certain period, or you know others who were active, then place them there..! With 'active' I mean activily contributing to the scene, not just watching demos when you were young and weren't a scene-member yet. The result will be a nice historical overview Naturally, a person or group can be placed in more than one period. Also, it's as well possible to place single groupmembers in a period, even if that means they're there twice. Remember, it's simply a historical overview about active people and groups. I reckon that in the revival years groups are less common than single people.
So, indeed, the list can grow quite large if we add *all* people and groups... fun isn't it? Also, scene-game makers are also allowed .. think Parallax etc.

So, to kick-off: (and correct me where I'm wrong)

pre-scene

Xelasoft
Merlasoft
Starcracks

early-scene (take Genic PD as a start)

Xelasoft
Genic
Royal MSX Force
ANMA
FAC
Mi-Chi
The Shadow (indie back then, rite Ro ?
Fony
Impact
Unicorn
BCF

main-scene (take Sunrise PD as a start)

Xelasoft
Sunrise
Royal MSX Force
ANMA
FAC
Mi-Chi
Fuzzy Logic
Fony
Impact
Unicorn
UMF
TNI
BCF

revival years (that's from 2000)

Sunrise
MRC
Teddywarez

So, copy/paste this list (rather not quote .. just copy/paste, and be nice with the [ b ] and the [ i ] )

This list was just a quick setup with some of the first names that sprang in my mind .. (so it's faaaaaaaaaaaar from complete) ..if you see yourself at the wrong place.. replace yourself then, and add more. I think watching all those old picturedisks is a good idea to gather some names

Read the footer Wolf. And your title misses the word "Dutch" You only mention Dutch groups or groups known in the Netherlands.

Oh and thanks for forgetting Cain

Wasn't J-War working on a 'scene' site? Why not just ask him for his scene list? Saves us all some trouble.

J-War is working on a scene dedicated website indeed. I'm currently coding some PHP routines for it (it's for file selecting, rating, download, counting, comment, upload etc. etc) So Yeah, such a history lesson would fit in ofcourse. I haven't spoken to J a while cuz of holidayz and all but I think at the end of this year the website might be somewhat online and fully working... we take our time cuz we wannit to b good
