High everybody!
Last night this idea came to me:
MSX Battle Opera
Fighting game tournament during the Bussum2k4 Marathon
Round 1: Yie Ar Kung Fu - Timed Challenge
During a fixed timeperiod (to be determined later, maybe 10 mins), each contestant tries to gain as much points as possible
Round 2: Fighters Ragnarok - One on One
Contestants fight each other head to head.
Scoring:
Timed challenge
Rounds played/won/lost/draw
Battles played/won/lost
Winners are declared by a system based on contestants' timed score from round 1 and round/battle results from round 2
Contestants register their nick (+group), full name, city/country of origin and their face (mugshot).
Prizes to be announced at a later stage (when I recieve enough feedback/help to run the tournament).
Any comments/suggestions/help/etc -> post it here!
Thank you.

That's what I thought
But I don't even know if I will be able to bring my MSX (propably not ), but maybe we can sort something out.
My plan is to use the big screen (what else) and any MSX that runs Yie Ar Kung Fu and Fighters Ragnarok. I will also need 2 joypads (prefer the same type, so the tournament will be fair)
so: Each contestant will play using the same type of controller (joypad).
I will provide Yie Ar Kung Fu and Fighters Ragnarok, as well as the means to take mugshots of contestants and record their scores. I will also bring a few prizes, but they will be a surprise to the general public of course
can I count on the origanisation of Bussum2k4 to help me with MSX Battle Opera? Please say yes, because as of now, I haven't got a clue to organize the One-on-One round.
Maybe:
1 everyone playing everyone
2 winners that emerge from 1 play eachother
3 and so on, until we have 4 (or more, depends on the prizes donated by sponsors (HINT )) contestants left, they will duke it out for 1st-etc place.
NOTE: Just don't expect anything posted here to be FINAL until I say so |

What about those who prefer to play using keyboard and hate joystics/joypads ?
Don't you afraid some player will kill your joypad/keyboard during the fight ?
I am not going to participate, but these issues seem important to me.

well I just said use joypads just to be sure there will be two available for the tournament, but hey - if you like your games to be played on a keyboard, you're free to do so.
NOTE: I'm forced to tell you I will be travelling *light* to Bussum2k4 (but heavier than last year - I will bring some equipment for the mugshots/scores/etc)
wolf: why don't you put together a puyo puyo tournament then? we could alternate between MSX Battle Opera / PuyoPuyo to prevent RSI amongst the players |

Sure... We have an MSX, and 2 joypads. No prob (though it's always more fun to bring your own MSX ofcourse ;p). You bring the games though . As far as the rest is concerned, of course we're happy to help out but it would be nice if you have already made some kind of setup about how to do everything. The abovementioned sounds nice but you've got to see if it doesn't add up to hours of playing . 10 minutes is a fairly long time, and if you're going to do a half competition... That can add up fast.
Stuff like that, try to think about possible pitfalls. Not that I ever prepared so thoroughly, I have to confess .

I believe i wrote before:

But maybe 10 mins IS too long, maybe 5 mins. max (depending on the amount of players, maybe even 2 or 3 mins)
Of course I will provide the games (unless someone knows of a great fighting game (MSX/MSX2) I cannot get a copy of
I will also do the recording of players/keeping scores and posting the results on my page.
The time issue:
In the event there's a truckload of players who enlist the tournament, we can skip round 1 (Yie Ar Kung Fu - Timed Score Challenge) and just do the One-on-One instead. This should allow for more time available and also to make the resulst make more sense
But, since this tournament is held during the Marathon, I believe the amount of players will not exceed 200+
Pitfalls I can think of now:
- odd number of players -> I will participate (of course not for a prize )
- only a handful of players -> it will be over VERY soon
- divine intervention during match (power failures, people walking in/out the room disturbing the players, etc) -> match restarts
- scores draw -> sudden death (maybe use the Yie Ar Kung Fu timed challenge to have as 'backup score' )
I'll get back to you with a more 'useful' playlist asap, in the meantime, keep those comments/suggestions/etc coming!

Bodyhammer: sure... Once things are more sorted out, I'll update the page and give msx.org a newspost. Maybe it'll pull some more people to the Marathon too .

@anyone interested in other tournaments:
why not organize your own:

|
Maybe we can add the Bombaman / PuyoPuyo/ ? tournaments to the MSX Battle Opera? please let me know your suggestions and try to be constructive, as a combined event calls for a LOT more organisation

Arjan: I think we'll most definately do that too... Bombaman is great multiplayer, I discovered .
Bodyhammer: well, you could also make one competition and the other just a 'gaming event'...
