When I do a remake, my goal is to try to stick to the original atmosphere/purpose, while using modern technology. Or, to put it differently: trying to give an impression how the original could've sound anno 2004..

Usually I change the atmosphere of the original. But then again, it also depends on what my mood is at that moment.

yeahwell, anyway.. the mood is not the issue here..

The real issue here is whether a remake of a scene-tune is done or not done. (an interesting debate if you ask me ) Let's remove the focus from "remake-composer vs the original composer" .. let's for once move it towards the listener.

Would there be a certain degree of interest from listeners to hear re-arranged scene-music? If yes, would that justify such a re-arrangement?

I'm actually quite surprised that there are certain objections anyway .. to me music is music.. whether it comes from the land of the rising sun or from the low lands .. I wouldn't treat it anymore different then a Japanese gametune if I were to remake some scene-tune. I can't speak for other arrangers ofcourse..

I don't believe in rivalry in the MSX scene.. not in 2004 anymore. If this concept was one from 1992, then one could say that there would be classic outperform arguements. But we're now looking at some of those tunes as a part of MSX-scene-history, from groups or individuals that are long gone.

What would a shrink say of all this ?

I don't think doing a remake of a scene nor a commercial track can be considered as a "Hey, look at me! I can do it better!", but more like a "Whoa, this is some cool song, this is my 2004 interpretation of it!"

wolf: I don't mind. You may remake all of my music ;p.

Seriously tho, I don't see how one could have a serious objection. Except when the original is recent, or on the same hardware, it's a different matter, I think. It needs to be a bit old to give it a 'nostalgia' justification (there isn't that much recent well-known stuff anyway...). And the hardware needs to be different (better/worse), otherwise one would probably indeed get the 'can do it better' impression.

ok... lets quit the talk, and lets do this

how do we start? first compile a list of possible songs we could remake ? and then by voting select the most popular one... and start arranging

In case of a challange/compo yeah .. otherwise (ad-hoc remakes) it doesn't matter ofcourse, just pick your tune of choice

well it seems fun to let everyone make their interpretation of a classic scene song and see what diversity we all come up with but random remakes is also fine by me ^_^b

Hahah brings back the memories of trying to think of the lamest names ever for songs... i always had trouble coming up with titles somehow (though I wasn't the one who came up with 'compjoetania' for our group) ... but I'm actually very interested in the result... let me know when it's finished ^_^

O_Quad ! .. some years ago I was working @ a company with some Quad members (G-day & Deadline)

ontopic: I've had troubles with titles as well, and when I *did have* a good title, then there was that barbarian called Ro who 'fuzzyfied' those titles again .. nowadays it's way more easy. The project-name is the title, and I don't come up with those names

heheh... I actually only knew their lead-programmer (Sarix) which was in some of my classes at Hogeschool Eindhoven.

I don't bother coming up with names either anymore... or when i absolutely have to, I open a dictionary at a random page and point my finger somewhere on that page ^_^b
