As you can see, smiley nr. 1 leaves a ! standing, and smiley nr. 2 eats a space on the left. Can't that be fixed easily?

the ! standing is on purpose, the left-space-eater will be fixed. The MRC doesn't tolerate pacman-smileys!

ah, the smiley only gets interpreted when it's preceded by a space:

:\ <-- NO!
:\ <-- YES!
