D-Tail got me some nice EVA-movies on a CDROM. It made me hook up to my MSX an old DVDROM player I still had somewhere.
Now I encounter a problem which I've had before with other CDROM drives as well. During playback of such an EVA file, the drive spins down and the playing of the EVA movie stops.
Is this some built in safety mode in the drive or something in order not to use more energy then needed?
It's quite irritating and I wonder if there's a solution to this. Do really OLD CDROM drives don't have this 'problem', maybe?
Any hints?

That sounds weird... Are you sure it's a DVD-drive?
At least mine keeps playing when I say it to do so |

I had the same problem testing the EVA CD I made for Grauw. I assumed it was a dodgy drive I hooked up to my turbo R, because when [D-Tail] ran it on his setup during Oss playback was flawless with no hangups.
It could be the filesystem. Make sure you burn your CD as a ISO9660, mode1. You won't be able to use long filenames, but since your MSX can't use those anyway, no problem! Also, this way you are sure it will work.
Never heard about anyone using a DVDROM to use as a CDROM drive on his MSX...

Maybe it's the media quality.
Combination of not so good disc with picky player can have it spin up and down and stop.
Old dvd-players are not the best cd-r readers at least that's my experience.

That's why I don't have a DVDROM connected to my MSX . Also, because I cannot recall MSX being able to read DVDROMs, there's actually no point in doing so either. |

Well, I just happen to have a spare DVDROM and no CDROM, that's the only reason I used it
Anyway, going to get myself an old crappy 4 speed CDROM or something, maybe that works better |

I've got an 8-speed, and as BHR mentions, it works flawlessly |

It's actually a common problem with newer drives. Faster drives spin down quicker because of the noise. If software reads in blocks, then there is a possibility that there is enough time between reads for the drive to decide to spin down. It's happens on regular PCs as well. However, the exact behaviour differs from model to model.

This could be it indeed, the drive I referred to was a 40-speed BTC. But I don't think speed is really an issue, this drive was crap in the brick it came from anyway . |

Latok --> You could've bought some of those CDROM players NBNO had on sale... They were cheap and old |

If you have a SCSI interface, yes those could be useful . |
