First time user and honestly, just introduced to the MSX.

I am a hard-core C=64/Apple/Atari retro nerd. However, I never got to use an MSX when I was a kid but after reading some of the specs and seeing that it is really supported, I would like to get me a MSX.

eBay seems to be dried up...where can I get one? I live in the USA so maybe that is why they aren't as popular over here?

Also, what is this "MSX on a chip" I just read about? Would this be recommended over a "real" MSX?

If you're on eBay, check a user named rklok. He is famous for importing all kinds of MSX software and hardware from Japan. Or post your request for an MSX system in the Trading and collecting bit of this forum.

If you are after a MSX turbo R, your first shot would be at rklok though.

Check eBay, try MSX on an "internationally available" seach. There are plenty of MSX/MSX2 machines. And sometimes, some MSX2+ or Turbo-R arise as well.

Welcome to the MSX scene! I have several MSX 2 computers for sale, I live in The Netherlands but shipping is no problem. My mail adress is Jetze @ Mellema.net.

The ultimate dream MSX would be a turbo R (Panasonic FS-A1ST or FS-A1GT).

The difference between these models are that the GT has 512k RAM instead of the ST's 256k and the MIDI interface (MSX MIDI). It also has a different connector configuration (no audio outs iirc). Both models can be upgraded to more internal RAM, though and unless you really need the MIDI, the ST would be your choice.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, rklok is one of the first people to contact if you are interested in a turbo R.

As far as programming is concerned, a turbo R with a harddisk or CF interface would be ideal. Of course you can also use that harddisk/CF to play games/demos from, run utilities like music trackers and graphics manipulation software, various musicplayers or edit and assemble your code.

If you intend to limit your use solely to games and developement, you may not have the need for a harddisk/CF setup but opt for cross developement instead, which is generally a faster and more convenient method of developing for the MSX system.

There you go, some nice information and suggestions from me. I would advise you to consider the opinions and/or suggestions from other users on this forum before making your definite choice though .

That's a good question.
Most of the MSX people prefer a Turbo R, i think.
I have a MSX 2 converted to 2+ and 7mhz (normal 3.5 mhz), expand with 512 kb memory, harddisk and some more extensions, and that's enough to me.
But you can try first a emulator, than you can sniff a bit on the MSX-system.
Look at the frontpage.

Oh, and I have a few Atari's too, cause of the midi

I'd say you need at least an MSX2, and more than the 'standard' 128kB memory is often quite handy. You might also want some additional sound cards like SCC or FM-pac/ fm-pak, this improves the sound (and the fun!) of some games.

And get one of the new 640k Moonsounds, available at Tilbu..
