Maybe some of you have seen this Compjoetania TNG project at the Tilburg2000. There, someone showed a betatype of a hardwaredevice which enables the possibility to play MP3-files on the MSX....
Since 2000, I haven't heard anything anymore on the subject.
Does anyone of you have more info on the possibilities that this project will become available to a larger audience?

it was a nice idea but should not become pub. Why? The people who're (maybe) going to develop the new MSX just have to add a very powerful CPU and there will be no need to a hardware mp3 device at all. Besides, what many cool other stuff can you do with CPU power that you cannot do with a mp3 device?

I agree that on a new MSX compatible system there will probably be no need for an external MP3-decoder, but for the existing MSX computers it would definitely be a very nice add-on.

All I know is that there`d be at least 3 orders from Norway for that thingie!
I mailed him, and he said he might produce if enough was interested.
Cheers!

Too bad Jon de Schrijder thinks of his MP3 hardware as a 'private project'. Novatec was working on something similar as well. Maybe it's time someone actually created a version for users? |

Well, no more reactions on this thread, so erhm...Probably we'll have to wait a loooong time before this comes available for the CURRENT MSX systems... |

Jon should make an mp3 player as an option in the Sunrise IDE interface, like RS232+IDE. That way he might cut down the usage even more on the MSX CPU when playing MP3`s from HD/CD.

IMO its a lame idea anyway. Adding CPU power is sufficient and integrating it in the IDE would prevent me from buying it! I play mp3 with my MPMAN or PC and integrating it in the IDE means extra pay!!
And it (probably) would not just be so easy to add JUST a random CPU that can power up the Z80.

Well erhm....I already have enough IDE interfaces, so I also rather would see a stand-alone MP3 device. I REALLY do hope it will be available for the current MSX systems. It would be a great enhancement and just very cool.

Also, why don't 16MB compactflash cards work okay with the compactflash adapter?! Now I have to buy a new one! |

Dunno why, but have the need to bring this thread back up. Is there still any hope for an MSX MP3 player?

The device itself is ready, so why not see if there's interest to start producing it in small numbers?
