Every time MRC makes a poll, someone is complaining about the poll system. Therefore I suggest, that next poll should be about how people should vote in MRC polls. :9
|
The question is not how to vote. In my statement as one those of who compains is the fact that I have strong objection to the way the pairs have been drawn.
It seems it is random. Looking at it I see e.g. our gamereader two times against the similair project obsonet and Dumas.
That is really coincidence ... . Besides that Obsonet won 2004 and is again news in 2005. No Dumas is
Furthermore the answer to Arnold_M would always be your choice. Although some people vote very strange one has to respect that, no doubt about. |

What one could do in the future is combine all related newspost about a single topic into one. There *was* an overkill of OCM news nominate. |

It's equal with the random system at sport-events (like darts), if two potential finalists are facing eachoter in the first round (and loose = leave) then that always looks sour compared to another first round with 2 beginners. The pollsystem works nice if you really are only interested in 1 winner, with the rest (2..x) being irrelevant. For another end-result, with a clear runner-up and #3, #4 etc. a points-donating system would work better (like @ the euro.songcontests for example, 1..10 points and 12 points).

Another way of getting a clearer runner-up list is to have the post with most points face the one with least points from previous round, and second most-second least and so on. Then the winners move on to the next round where the same scheme is used. So its almost the same type of seeding thats often used in sports events.
The problem is of course the first round. Maybe having a points donating system for the first round and have say the 16 or 32 best ones move on to the next round and use a cup like voting then.
I think that with small improvments like this, the voting could be even more fun. I like the voting as it is now too but it would be more fun and interesting to be able to be able to determine the order of runner-ups as well.

MRC-polls are a little more complicated than a darts tournament. If A beats B and B beats C then in darts you would expect A to beat C. With a multi option poll this need not be the case. This is called the voting paradox.
The simplest example is with three voters and three alternatives:
Voter 1: A,B,C
Voter 2: B,C,A
Voter 3: C,A,B
A beats B (1+3 against 2)
B beats C (1+2 against 3)
C beats A (2+3 against 1)
There is a lot of interseting voting theory on wikipedia. Of course there is an important constraint on the voting method used for the MRC polls; participating should not be so much work that it makes people dicide not to take the effort to vote. |

Although I'm quite a bit disappointed on Sunrise questioning my objectivity in megapolls, and do think some people get a bit carried away for something that's just meant as an extra element of fun on the MRC, how about doing this in following megapolls.
1) Two rounds in which all nominees battle each others
2) Combining the points awarded in those two rounds, the top 66% moves on to the next phase, which is...
3) the method dvik proposed above.
As for voting being time-consuming: to every voting method there are downsides. If you make a ranking, titles easily go overlooked, even if they are nominated. In the mega-polling system as it is now, there will certainly come a point in time where filling in a votesheet consumes only a little bit of time... of course, the more join, the better.

I think the MRC voting is fun (more fun than voting for the European parlament) Thats why I always vote (except when I miss it). Snouts suggestion sounds great and will make it even more fun. Good job snout and keep it up |

As the current poll is on for too long already, .. suggest-a-poll!
Best end-demo music in a game. Quite commonly a game with good overall music might very well have a crappy end-tune or one that doesn't match the atmosphere of the game.. (Aleste2). Let's list all the fav. endtunes and vote!
(end-demo tune means all tunes that belong to the end-demo of a game, in case there's more than one tune)

Looking at the current row over GameStats/the first MSX-related spyware we could have a poll about the desirability of it:
Would you like to see GameStats implemented in your favourite emulator?
A. Yes, I want statistics.
B. Well, it would keep the developers from the street for a while.
C. No, I can think of more interesting features spend time on.
D. No, all spyware is evil.
