| I'm working on a game... don't know if it's good enough for MSXDev :/

Since I'm a fan of "Hat Trick", a very old arcade game made by Bally Sente, I though I could make a conversion of this game for MSXDev '06. The game rules are very simple: you play an Ice hockey match, red vs blue; who scores the highest number of goals within the time limit wins. So it shouldn't be too difficult to make a similar game on MSX.
As you can see from the image there are still no goalkeepers; I was going to add them in the very next days '-__-
The game is entirely made in Basic, and that's the weakest point: The movement of players and their animations are not really smooth.
Also, as Hat Trick is still a licensed game, I don't even know if this game could be accepted by the MSXDev jury when finished. I don't really know if I should continue developing the game or not.
What do you think? |

Excerpt from the rules that you can find on the msxdev site :
"Although original games will be preferred, non-original concept games will be also accepted. This includes conversions from arcades and/or other console or computer systems, as well as adaptations of already existent games. However, recompiled games are not acceptable. Already released games or hacked games will not be accepted either. In case of doubt, the jury is entitled to ask for proofs, such as the source code of the game. Any suspicious game would be disqualified if the jury decides so. It should be remarked that only complete games will be accepted: beta-versions, demos or “to be finished” games will not be included in the contest."
So, you can perfectly adapt this game for MSX and submit it to the msxdev contest.
What concerns the speed of the game, you can find tips and help on this forum, but also on other MSX forums or channels, for example on the Karoshi forum :

looks like screen 1 ... there's a certain poke which allows you to use screen 2 like you use screen 1 in basic, but with nicer characters ofcourse (2 colors per 8 pix, for each line in a char, rather than 2 colors per 8 chars like in sc1)

Reminds me of 'Wild soccer', one of the hilarious entries of the development competition of MSX Magazine 3 (new editions): a football field with 2 players, 1 ball. the more speed you have, the longer it takes to 'turn around'. The idea: get the ball across the goal-line of your other player. You could walk relatively far off the soccer-field, and the controls are rather crappy on purpose, which guaranteed for quite a lot of gaming fun |

Yes, that's exactly the game that made me remember about Hat Trick and how much fun I had while playing it with an old friend back in 1985. There was also a conversion for the Commodore 64 made by Capcom (!) :
I'm not pretending to be a good coder as Capcom employees, but I hope to put together at least a decent version of the game |

I'd say: try and find a (small, yet) original twist to this original and potentially hilarious game concept and off you go! Sounds like the perfect MSXdev'06 entry to me.

Cesco, your work looks really good to me!!!!!
And if you want, it is possible to make your screen 1 background look almost arcade/c64 perfect!
But as I said, it already looks really good!
Happy programming!!
