The R800 was well know for be rough "equal" to a Z80 running like "29" Mhz.
What do you think about the early reports and benchmarks?

I want some good software to run on the Panasonic MSX Turbo R.

It's hard to say how much faster the R800 is. It really depends on the task it's executing, but generally you can assume anything from 4-10x as fast, 5-6x being the average. Pretty much all software runs on the turboR by the way, and most of it will work fine in R800 mode too. Just try to find a CHGCPU program in our downloads database, and start experimenting...

it still makes me wonder why a CPU switch was never implemented in MSX-BASIC by default...

I think Sonic_aka_T is quite a close to reality... You get most out of R800 when you run something that really needs calculating power. I think, that Dragon's Lair demo is kind of worst case scenario... It actually runs much slower in R800!

About CPU switch in BASIC, look here:

Kind of odd indeed. It would've been like 20 lines of code, and made life just that much easier... :/

Idd, VDP access was really brutalized on the turboR. It's a real shame too, the engine makes it wait *so* much longer than it actually should, it's quite ridiculous. Imagine how a full-speed OTIR would've been with just the required wait! Full screen SC12 video's anyone?

Time for a good old msd no-wait upgrade for turboR's

I used the MSX-DOS 2 and CHGCPU.COM worked fine. Even when I switched to MSX-BASIC.

Now, where is the program to boot a copy protected disk?

While the R800 is not a problem for most software, DOS2 will be. It's easy enough to start the turboR in R800 mode by simply not inserting any disk in the drive, but then it will be in DOS2 mode as well. Most software that wasn't specifically designed to work under DOS2, won't work on DOS2. I sugguest you make normal disk with COMMAND.COM, MSXDOS.SYS and CHGCPU.COM. Boot with that, turn the R800 on, go to BASIC. After that, insert the disk of the game you want to play, and type CALL SYSTEM. This will work for most disk-games, unless they specifically turn off the R800.

In my experience, most DOS programs work just fine in DOS2. That's because most DOS programs don't touch the mapper.

Most programs could work with 2.20 , but can't work with 2.30!

Anyway, the BASIC program is very nice ... This could work even with MSX-DOS! MG0 ,MAG and BLS works fine.

It is nicer to see the NEC PC98 and Sharp X68000 files on MSX Turbo R!

If I format a disk as MSX-DOS2 and copy the files , would be possible to use most programs in MSX-DOS2?
Wasn't some utilities to fix MSX-DOS discs or convert those for MSX-DOS2 boot strap sequence!? Where is the fixing command?

Most DOS1 software runs just in DOS2. It doesn't really matter on what kind of disk it is.
To convert a DOS1 formatted disk to DOS2, use FIXDISK.COM, supplied with MSX-DOS2

But anyone know how CPU switch works? During program execution?! How can do it?
Should they freeze the other cpu and enable the r800 at the same PC address it was executing code the old z80?
