After connecting my VG8235 via Scart or RF to different monitors/TVs I got the feeling, that the aspect ratio in screen mode 6 (512x212) is not 2:1 but maybe 1,5:1 or even less. On my big 16:9 TV it even looks like 1:1! (very wide screen format )
Do I just have the wrong monitors or is it true?

It's fairly easy to get a Panasonic MSX2+ or turboR as well. They're just a little more expensive. ...

Thanx for the hints. Ok, really not cheap but I will think about it!

Philips and Sony MSX2's are practically the only ones that were sold in Europe.

Anyway, I haven't tried yet if the 2nd drive really works with SymbOS. But congratulations on your 8250 Does it have extra RAM?

There's two turboR's on ebay.es right now, worth every penny

Ahem.....the first one is a bit overpriced, isn't it? . The second one is very interesting; but the TR comes together a lot of software that maybe you don't want.

UH? on 4:3 monitors msx does not have a 256/192. = 1.33 asp. ratio or 2.66 at high res?

PingPong: MSX does have a 256/192 resolution mode. Simply reset the right bit (7) with

VDP (10) = VDP (10) and 127 This will change the y-resolution from 212 to 192. Set it again with OR 128.

I know this, thx, my question is only on the aspect ratio: if msx had 1.33:1 aspect ratio,
-plotting an orizzontal line made up of 45 pixels (not line command 45 pset commands)
-plotting a vertical line made up of 45 pixels (not line command 45 pset commands)

should show like two box lines of == length. As i remember this was in sc2,4,5,8
in hires modes, the width is half the height. That's all

This is what I mean:

http://www.symbos.de/files/symbos16-9.jpg

The ratio seems to be close to 1:1 as it looks nearly like on the CPC.
On SPLs pictures it seems to be more close to 2:1.

The ratio also differs between 50 en 60 hz. On 60Hz the height is much bigger than with 50Hz. It differs 50 lines on the total screen. (not the visable part)

The problem then becomes finding a board with a big enough FPGA chip on it, not to mention all the connectors you'll need. I've seen boards that look 'ideal' enough to make an MSX out of, but none of them have anything near the amount of LEs needed to make an MSX2+. The OCM was already on the small size with 12k LEs. Finding something bigger seems almost impossible, unless you're willing to spend 500 eurii on a board, which most people aren't.

What's about this one?

http://www.terasic.com.tw/cgi-bin/page/archive.pl?Language=English&CategoryNo=39&No=83

It even has 20.000 LEs! And Altera writes, that it will be a "low-cost" board. Sounds like the price will be <200$, as the "powerful" version of this board is about 270$.

I mean the 212 lines are spread out over a lager area. Making the visable area bigger on 60Hz and therefore the ratio is changed.

Well, this version works better at my setup (Philips VG-8235 with double sided drive and Sunrise IDE). I finally get to see it for myself and am very much impressed. However: it only recognizes 576K of the RAM, which is half of what I have.

Have you tried Symbos MSX in a NON 16:9 monitor or TV? I've tried in my TV and yes, it looks like you have seen in my monitor, which is a C=1081.

@Diederick76: Because of its CPC origin currently 576K (64K+512K) is the maximum amount of supported Ram. I am thinking about increasing it to 1MB or 2MB, but more than 2MB is not possible, as the current ram config is always stored as an 8bit value.

@SPL: Yes, right, on a 4:3 the ratio is more like 2:1. Just funny to see, that the MSX is perfectly prepared for 16:9
