The MSXdev rules are a bit global when it comes to reusing gfx and music from other games/authors.
As there are entries from former competitions which use gfx and music from others. I'm wondering what is (and what is not) allowed.
I don't want to acuse anybody of plagiarism. I can imagine that it is a dificult to find a PSG musician (pt3 format) for example these day's. Same goes for gfx.
My interpretation is
Reuse gfx and music : Not allowed.
'Remix' gfx and music : Allowed but try to add somehting new to it.
What's your opinion?

The general rules are very clear :
"
Although original games will be preferred, non-original concept games will be also accepted. This includes conversions from arcades and/or other console or computer systems, as well as adaptations of already existent games. However, recompiled games are not acceptable. Already released games or hacked games will not be accepted either. In case of doubt, the jury is entitled to ask for proofs, such as the source code of the game. Any suspicious game would be disqualified if the jury decides so. It should be remarked that only complete games will be accepted: beta-versions, demos or “to be finished” games will not be included in the contest."
So, if you apply these rules to specific parts of the game, such as graphics or musics, the MSXdev jury has a tolerance zone in which bonus points can make the difference between total new graphics/musics and partially reused graphics/musics.
In case of totally reused graphics/musics, if they come from the same (team) developers than the original game or if the developers have the agreement of the real graphics/musics creators, there's no any problem, but of course, no bonus points in this case !
With specific parts, you can be a little more flexible, but without ignoring the general rules that don't allow hacked or recompiled games. Don't forget also that a conversion will normally reuse some parts with adaptations, so that's why you must be flexible.

then ditch PT3
UU music was made in MBWave, if you can code a game, then a small custom PSG player shouldn't be much of a problem.. |

So a remake, while trying to keep the spirit of the original game, uses the same (better) gfx, sfx, music and gameplay, it will be "penalized" with no bonus points, right?. If so, it could be a bit frustrating to keep the development of a great remake knowing that it will be "low" rated by that. Of course I'm not talking about plagiarism and such practices...
I'm for an overall qualify of the game, it's good or it isn't. In the first case, is there something that could be done better?, maybe then some penalty points could be applied; but with care...
Veeeeery hard job this year for the jury, looking the quality of some of the forthcoming entries, it could be a matter of fractions of point the final decision.

Note that sometimes is harder to 'MSX-ize' graphics from higher systems and make them fit into the requirements mantaining the original feeling than actually create graphics form scratch... We are talking here about two different things: one thing is remaking graphics adapting them at pixel level to convert them correctly for the MSX, and other thing is to just 'rip' some graphics from any existing production. The same for musics... it is not the same a direct rip-off than a re-arranged tune. But anyway, I think this is quite obvious for everyone . |
