No MSX software was ever sold in USSR (except educational programs that Ministry Of Education have bought from developers and gave for free to schools and universities), noone ever saw game cartridge (!), but everybody played King's Valley and even special Vampire Killer version sent to student's computers from the teacher's station via classroom network.

Imagine the situation - 99.9% of software was illegal !

To be more precise, there was no such thing as "software import".

As for hardware, from my experience MSX2 was more widespread than MSX1, but I can't find the numbers. At least that was the situation in various cities and regions across USSR I visited while participating in programming olympiads and summer programming schools in 1988-1991.

*bump*

So, no really significant drop of entries with the dev'06 specs.

"Could this mean that there's no harm in allowing megarom again for dev'07?"
"and some more RAM, f00l"
"and more "
"that all would make my plan come together"

Regarding T:U, we'll take our time to finish it decently (and it well be! omg it will! ), can't say when tho. Could be months from now.

Funny to see this thread beeing bumped. I was thinking about the dev'07 specs this morning.

Considering the number of entries and the quality. I see no real indication that the RAM/ROM will influence the number of finished entries.

Titles like The Cure and UU probably made developers a little over-excited. That is according to me the real reason (time) behind most of the unfinished entries.

Also I don't see any unfair competition between the 48kb and 128 kb ROMs

I'd would be more than content with the current specs for MSXdev'07.
And additional extra RAM..... I'm OK with that too.

As in each edition of MSXdev there were un-announced entries, I think there is no way to estimate the drop-rate. In each edition there must have been people planning to enter the contest with un-announced games and not making it (in time). In MSXdev'05 there were several "cancelled for MSXdev'04"-entries. With same (or higher) specs next year, perhaps we'll see some of the games cancelled this year in the '07 edition.

The projects we know were cancelled were all - as far as I know - not cancelled because of specs, but because lack of time/motivation.

See:
TT-Virus - cancelled due to lack of time.
LUX and Dash - cancelled due to lack of time
<Title: Unknown> - Cancelled due to lack of time / not intending to do another deadline-hackjob but delivering a really polished game this time.
Cyberware - cancelled due to hardware problems (and as the came has been first announced in 1994, it not making it this year would not have been a 'specs-thing' either)

One could argue that lower specs means less development time, though

Speedjet Racers is being finished right now but still need some gfx work. It is expected to be released soon (of course, out of MSxdev'06 as we didn't make it in time).

About '07 specs... Wolf_, what about 32kb rom 16kb ram?

Just kiddin', eeehum, I better start ...

Let's close definitely the MSXdev'06 contest with the final results and then we can start wondering about the specs

I wonder at a good programmer could do with this combo

the challenge ofcouorse is the msx1 itself

probably nothing.

As long as things technically have to run on MSX1 anything above this has to be somewhat compatible with that. Screen 2 or 4 on MSX2 would be an option. Ofcoz patternmode @ g9k could be an option, but then this patternmode is just a souped-up screen 2.. I wouldn't bother. Make a dedicated g9k game instead.

VA: About '07 specs... Wolf_, what about 32kb rom 16kb ram?

I know you're kidding, but consider this: those programmers who like to hack and code like a madman (invent all kinda optimized routines to create gfx, music, maps etc.. ) will always get more out of *whatever* specs. So, limiting specs to make the whole range of entries more on the same line (which could be a more balanced competition) isn't going to stop some ppl here of making bigger-than-life games..

ROM for gamesize
RAM for programmers difficulty (which includes motivation, gameplay options, gamequality, vastness etc.)

ohwell..

I have seen the true reason why we need 64K RAM
because the rom mappers SUCK !!!
I have just discovered that in order to handle more than 32K of rom code,
I need to pass copy it in RAM !!

This is true for any of the mappers !!!
