I have still a working Quick-disk drive reader at home with dozen of disks. Bought before the era of 3,5" diskettes, it reads 2,8" floppy disks with a maximum of 64Kb per side and *unfortunately* in sequential mode, not random access... this means that if you have three files named file1.bas, file2.bas, file3.bas and you want to delete file1.bas you have to delete file2.bas and file3.bas *BEFORE BEING ABLE TO DELETE file1.bas! But back in that days I was more than happy with it because I was able to load games faster

I was wondering if OpenMSX or BlueMSX will emulate this piece of cr... ahem... this wonderful device sooner or later

I don't know of a Philips model by the way. I do know the Mitsumi QDM-01. What is the product code of the Philips QD drive?

I've made a photo of it. Here it is:



its code is VY-0002. On the instruction booklet (that I still have somewhere in my room) it is written that the drive was made by Mitsumi and marketed by Philips.

For a diskless MSX owner this device still has some value.
I think it's even not too hard to load multi-binary megarom by using self-extracting (packed) version to fit one side and pausing between first and second half of bins while you replace disks.

The only problem is that data transfer is not trivial (the owner should load programs via tape and then save to disk) and ... how many disks do you have ? Can I buy more somewhere ?

This is a strange remark coming from a a project that aims for perfect emulation of MSX ...

It may be low on the wishlist, talking about complete waste of time is what many think about the whole concept of emulation.

I guess they mean perfect emulation of the MSX itself, but not complete emulation of all hardware ever released. Furthermore, no standard has been set for the images of these disk, and I even doubt if these images exist.

Then take advantage of this fact and create a new format standard It will prove better than complaining about existing formats

And I agree with HansO remarks: go for it emu makers!!!

THere are more important things to emulate first, that's indeed what I meant. But I doubt there will ever be QD emulation...

Anyway, I wasn't aware about the Philips QD drive at all! I'll add it to the hw list!
