Almost all msx users know that konami green beret is somewhat a product with a degree of quality very below than the average konami titles.

Most say because was never developed by the same peoples that developed nemesis, gradius etc.
I'm not so sure that better results could be obtained on msx1

But i like to know your opinion about this:

"Considering the sprite gfx limitations on msx1 could they got better results?"
"If yes what is your suggestion about improving the game gfx quality?"
(ex: use more colored sprites, even with flickering, remove the scroll and work on a "page" basis, allowing more coloured details, etc.)

thx.

What about 'ditch it and make it for MSX2 instead'? Some games are very well possible on MSX1, others aren't -at least if you want decent quality-. Usas is also not possible on MSX1 with decent sprites (and 4 of 'em on a row eh..), it's why I never really liked MoG and its near-transparent sprites.

So, you agree with me, basically, this is the max we could get on msx1...
anyone thinks different?

No, it's not the max. Although I don't completely dislike the MSX version, it doesn't make use of the original gfx (the spectrum version does that and it's much more close to the original). The moving sprites are UGLY.
About the sprites, using two sprites instead only one (1 the upper half, 1 bottom half) you can squeeze some more colors for characters. I'm not sure about that combination because it depends too much about how is designed the final sprite, also it depends on how would be placed the sprites on screen to avoid flickering between different platforms; but it's a possibility to explore.
The backgrounds are also poorly colored, you can play only with the bg color (IIRC the fg is black always); but it doesn't make much use of the MSX1 color resolution (I can't remember too much gradients).

they used one fg color to allow the use 4 'real' sprites on scan line otherwise the flikering increase to much.

The problem is here, i think :

to get two colored sprites they have used a combination of sprite+fg grafix keeping the background of a solid color. this means very bad gfx.

I'm not talking about the speccy conversion; but the arcade version, it's just that the speccy uses the same arcade gfx!

Yeah; but they used the bg color very poorly...

The drawback is a totally monocromatic game, as we have seen to much on the msx1 screen.

The gfx never bothered me. I always liked it when I was younger. The 'low quality' part is a bit hyped i think.

I personaly think that greenberet and MSX1 are just not a real good combination. For this kind of game you need the more than 4 single colored sprites on a line. too bad. MSX2 would have been a better choice I think.

So I think they couldn't have done a lot better.

@Ping Pong: Looking for a new project? (greenberet 2)

Again, that's not the question, it's just the shape of the sprites. The MSX1 characters are fatty soldiers compared with the neat graphics of the arcade and monochromatic conversions (that are graphically superior, at least for me )

IMHO that's not a reason at all. G'n'G suffers the same problem and seems that a decent version could be done. It's just a question of time and resources, prolly Konami UK wasn't provided with the original arcade graphics and by some strange reason they choose to make a new set of sprites

But the graphics weren't the main reason the game sucked. The game was slow, the sound effects were bad (I remember a deafening noise-like sound when firing a bazooka. Thought my monitor was defected.) and the whole gameplay was just to simple. If Green Beret was a bit more like Contra aka Gryzor the game would have sucked (a bit) less. So I hope that nobody is planning a remake or something because that would be a total waste of time IMHO...
