Alrighty then. Something I am not working on.
Made this experimental picture just for fun. Raise the standard a bit (and expectations unfortunately).

What's the deal with the figures/sprites? Are they supposed to be layered sprites? Or is there some tight integration with the background I didn't spot?

Layered sprites. First the front sprites will flicker (with 3 in line see picture). If more in line all will start flickering. I have no idea what it would look like for real. Can't be worse than conventional flickering.

I think the flickering result will be less worse than conventional way to do.
Only a suggestion: in the bottom part there are two grayed enemies.
I think flickering will be less noticeable if the entire body (that actually is grayed) will be grayed only where the top enemy layer (white) have no pixels "on"
Basically the trick on the tecnique you are using is to let flicker the layer that have less pixel area that can disappear.
the human eye will non notice the small changes when they are very fast

this is IMHO a good way to get 4 msx1 colored sprites/scanline...

Someone had ever seen scentipede for msx1? this game works in screen 1 or 2 featuring charater with 3 colors per scanline. this is done changing very fast the attributes of the charaters. the player have the illusion of a charater whose body is of color A outlined with color B with the background of color C.
Really this could be done with sprites to achieve more sprites/scanline if we want them multicolor.

Yup! I loved the arcade game, and dreamt during the 80s that some version would pop on the MSX... which never happened

Is it a port from Colecovision?

Yes, thats exactly the Colecovision one, but with the title screen from the arcade version

I still have to do some stuff with it, but it's already fully playable

Great!, Jungle Hunt is a old fave!. There's a brilliant port on the TI-99/4A (builds a TMS9918); but the coleco version seems more faithful. On the TI there're other arcade conversions done by Parker with very good graphics (I'm thinking now in Popeye) that maybe could serve as inspiration for a MSX conversion.

No, not really. I am way to occupied working om something else not dev ralated. Also for msx 1 and even in this early stage already impressive.
It's likely going to be a 512kb rom with scc and you need 64kb ram in your msx.
Hi-spec as you might say.

With those specs, it'd fit the MRC Megachallenge.
