That vortex tracker is still your best shot however, if you want to get the best from the PSG. By the way, I myself have used MBWave for UU and RNFF, as we used our own -simple 'n small- PSG player. I'm about to use a new internal format for the next game. And that's also something to keep in mind: the PSG is so simple it's relatively easy to make a new music format or tool even. But that's up to a coder like nerlaska then. In any case, until the last 2..3 years the PSG never was the popular music chip on MSX among sceners. Because there have been extensions from early on, we always supported those, while on other systems with a PSG, the PSG was all they had, so ppl did more with that PSG. You'll probably find more PSG tools on other systems than MSX.

Hi Gnosis,
I also need a musician for a game I am developping around the story of John Carpenter's movie "Escape from NY".
This game is being developped on MSX2, and I would like to use the SCC soundchip.

Vortex Tracker is distributed as a 7-zip archive. This is simular to regular zip files, but it requires a seperate application to unpack the archive. This application is freely available on: www.7-zip.org/. Once you unpacked the package, you will see an executable which Windows 2000 will understand. |

Those crazy fools should use RAR or ZIP. |

But both rar and zip are commercial products, the 7-zip format isn't. Personally, I like the 7-zip manager a lot. It has a tiny interface, it is able to unpack the most common archives (rar/zip), and it's free. Not as in free because I never registered and it didn't stop running, but as in -free. |

And yet the majority of compressed downloads around the world are RAR or ZIP. As a website I'd at least offer RAR/ZIP as an alternative then..

Yeah, I aggree on that. I use 7-zip, but I always pack archives using zip compression instead of the 7zip compression algorythm/container. Maybe in a few years it would make sense to publish archives as .7z

Dunno, the more ppl use it, the smaller the chance that you can change it. And each day more and more ppl use rar and zip.

A song in PT3 format can be patched to send data to SCC too.
Ofcourse, in a "plain" mode of transition, the result of such a patch for SCC will be round 'n' about the values which you have put in the PSG.
Maybe somehow one could add extra variables to the song which tell the SCC channels to delay or detune, but as far as Vortex Tracker is concerned, that's might be about as far you could get.
So, if you'd want to create SCC + PSG music nowadays, thus with independent channel input for both chips, which program should one use and/or might have been used in the past?
Did that SCC Tracker program ever support PSG? IIRC it didn't.
Koustracker from Soksoft, maybe? |

I didn't see the last gartner reports, so I don't know if that's true I think free software will eventually replace commercial alternatives, unless the commercial alternative provides something extra that is worth the cash (being service or features). |

Some ppl love that hideous app called 'Musica', which iirc supports MSX-Music, PSG and SCC..
(I think I'd get a fever from that app!)
What about SME3 from Xelasoft? |

There's "legally free" and "free in the minds of ppl". I estimate that 99.99% of all ppl use warez versions of WinRAR/WinZIP. As long as they're satisfied, there's no reason for them to pick a free alternative.. WinRAR/ZIP was already "free" to them. All this makes estimations on what might happen in the future a bit tricky as long as they're only based on legal/correct situations and not on reality. |
