"read 'Yamaha FM Sound Synthesizer Unit II' and 'Model SFG-05', you have the upgraded version. There also was a later model called the CX5M II/128. These two latter versions were velocity-sensitive playable via MIDI."
Most info-text from http://yamaha-cx5m.com is a complete copy paste from "http://www.msx-plaza.eu/home.php?page=misc/yamaha_cx5m"
Trying so sell for such a high price you could try to write your own text....
I still have a Toshiba Music Module incl. Keyboard and box (in original platic) in a almost never used state for sale.. $800,- anyone? |

I really wouldn't know, whether this is a low serial number or not. Maybe Yamaha only manufactured 1780 CX5M/II's, then it's one of the last ever built
(From my university days, I vaguely remember some math lectures on probability theory. It should be possible to estimate the total number of products built, based on only 2 or 3 serial numbers...
[edit]a bit of googling and here we go. The formula is actually quite simple (M-1)(S+1)/S , where M is the highest serial number, and S the number of samples. Filling out the numbers we have - cx5mguy's 7090 and manuels 1559 (my CX is a different series!) - brings us: (7090-1)(2+1)/2 == 10633 (rounded down). So, to be honest, that 7090 doesn't look that low to me anymore. Sorry
Of course, the statistics change completely if anyone brings in a CX5M with a higher serial number

Its much more likely that cx5mguy's computer has a high serial number. I got my first one (the one with the lowest serial number) in 1984 just after the release and the interest for the computer was very high and my guess is that allmost all CX5M's with low serial numbers were sold and put into music production very quick.
A CX5M with a higher serial number sounds like a late one which never got sold because of new technology (Atari ST, ...)

I think it's a high serial number too; mine has 001915). Maybe this one should me markated as "One of the last CX5M's made, in mint condition!".

MSX was the name of a standardized home computer architecture in the 1980s. It was a Microsoft-led attempt to create unified standards among hardware makers, conceived by one-time Microsoft Japan executive Kazuhiko Nishi. Despite Microsoft's involvement, MSX-based machines were seldom seen in the United States but were hugely popular in other markets. Eventually 5 million MSX-based units were sold world-wide

Yup, I believe that the only two MSX computers sold in the States are the Yamaha CX5M (and its predecessors) and Spectravideo.

Of those 5 milion MSX units, only 10.000 or so are Yamaha CX5M's though which explains the relatively low model numbers of all MSXes mentioned here in the forum. Would be interesting to know the real number but I guess noone knows that...
