Ah, sorry, Dvik you are right... On MSX2 you can do 2.5K (For example 12fps EVA format goes beyond 2.5K), but in case of MSX1 it just does not work.

Yeah, those slow outs are not only slowing things down. Its also making it harder to write code if you want to do as much fast blitting as possible.
But you can still do a decent scroller though. I don't think a 2-pixel scroller will look much different from a 1-pixel scroller.

What would you consider the game with the best and most smooth scroll from the golden days of msx (konami games for example) but only for msx1?
Parodius seems to have not so smooth scroll although it is one of the best games.

The omniscroll of "Theseus" without doubt. Using only horizontal scroll take a detailed look at "Malaika", it's one of the best examples of smooth scroll.

Remember the stone-age wheel man, who had to collect stones as tolls to pass to the next mountain? That was a really fast smooth horizontal scroll!

Thx, a lot to all. I will think about the game.
However, i want to make a msx1 60hz game, with no VDP tricks, so no tile mirroring / sprite mirroring etc. because i want to make available to all msx1. IMHO if a trick could be used, it MUST work on all msx, else is not standard....
So, at the cost of a 2 pixel scroller, and lowering fps, i think i will work in msx1 screen 2 standard mode.

A Spectrum conversion with a few true MSX details...; although good, not being the scroll one of them... |

Perhaps, but if Tracer has smooth scroll with Spectrum techniques, how good would a similar scroll be using only MSX real techniques?

I think Malaika and the GnG demo are good examples of what is possible. I'm sure its possible to improve these scrollers a bit but it gives an idea of whats possible on an MSX1.

What kind of details?
i see only the use of 4 sprites in the start screen ...
and a linear gradient effect on top...
they do not have make use of any msx feature... |
