is the volume of the PSG louder on a real machine than in blueMSX? it seems unusually low... the SCC channels are super loud and the PSG are not

Depends on the machine. The PSG in the 8250/55/80 are usually a tad louder, while iirc on some -iirc Texas Instruments- MSX1 the PSG is way too soft -leading to ppl think something's broken as they don't hear drums in konami games-. Therefor, balance controls are added to emulators.

There are indeed differences between different MSXes. the blueMSX volumes are calibrated after one machine (can't remember which one).
Iirc, the MSX-Audio cartridge has a jumper where you can set the volume depending on your MSX.
If anyone has any ideas on how to adjust the default volumes in bluemsx, let me know. I'm not sure if the MSX we used for calibration is representative.

As a key rule I tend to mention the tR as correct balance between PSG and FM-Pac. The reason is open to debate tho..
If you listen to Illusion City, then you might notice that the PSG is more intensely used, the PSG noise complements the FM drums more than in earlier MC games. They could've done so because they might've thought that it'd sound the same everywhere as a tR is a tR everywhere.
But all this might as well be complete nonsense .. |
