Most of the times the problem was easy to solve just by adjusting potentiometer inside the TV, but on other models it was really hard to adjust it so that both 50 & 60Hz modes work withouth touching the TV. I just guess that your mother would have killed you if you would have gone even near the TV with screwdriver.

50/60Hz is not the same as PAL/NTSC...! But it depends mostly on your video connector. If you use a SCART connector with RGB, the video standard doesn't matter and you just need a TV capable of both 50 and 60Hz display frequency. Most can handle it.
If you use an MSX with composite or RF out, it matters if you use a PAL or NTSC MSX. Better buy a Japanese MSX if you're in the US to be sure.

Sometimes, I booted the "60 hz-using" games anyway, just to hear the music.

When one day, the (very old) TV finally showed agressive flashes, emitted smoke from the back and just... died immediately after that, I was happy not to be really blamed for that...

Actually, I was reading an old computer magazine (dating from January 1985) not long ago that has interesting news about that.

The magazine was reporting news from that year's Las Vegas CES. Microsoft was still cooperating with ASCII at that time, and so Microsoft was officially "representing" the MSX standard at the 1985 Las Vegas CES. Microsoft made a press conference with very affirmative statements, saying that they were "working towards invading the US market" with MSX machines, even if it meant "lowering the prices to unknown levels". A lot of MSX machines were presented at that show, from almost every manufacturer known at that time.

Funny to realize that the ATARI 520ST was also presented at that very same CES.
The next generation was already there ...

It probably was Atari ST and Amiga which killed any chance of MSX 1 and MSX 2 becoming a world standard. The next generation of machines was way too powerful. Too bad the MSX Association was so late with their 16 bit alternative. By the way, Turbo-R was more of an effort by the ASCII corporation than the MSX Association wasn't it?

They do work on TVs, but having them on the desk in front of the TV is preferable... I'll get my coat...

MSX Association wasn't existing until 2001 or so, when ASCII transferred copyrights/IP/etc to them. (AFAIK!)
