When coding the controls for a game, do you consider your production being played on an emulator?

You may or may not be aware of it, but due to very crappy (lazy?) design, most keyboards for IBM-compatible machines cannot handle certain key combinations.

One of the worst control-failures is [LEFT] + [UP] + [SPACE]; this will have absolutely no effect.

You can imagine this totally ruins the gameplay in certain cases.

This is why I decided to use the [Z] and [X] keys for firebuttons in my productions.

I usually dont care about it. All my games are meant to be played on real MSXs, if they happen to work on emulators, it's just a side-bonus

Also I use a good old AT keyboard (with PS/2 adapter) and have no problems with LEFT/UP/SPACE. Or any "keys"/space combo for that matter...

I'd assume emulating. Maybe not for all of us, but certainly for newbies we haven't met yet. Just support both normal keys and PCkeyboard-safe keys

Good emulators let you change the mapping, at least for the joystick. You could use a PC joystick as well, e.g.

That's a great feature manuel, but I don't think it's very "n00b-proof", if you know what I mean.
