After being away from the MSX-scene for over 25 YEARS!!! I've finally decided to come back and bring some new LIFE to the MSX !!

Literally new life...cause my two SON's are joining me in this QUEST.
After telling them over and over and over again how I started my programming career on the MSX. (Yes I am now a senior software engineer at bill's)
They each got their own MSX and started fiddeling around with it. And now I am proud to say they too have the MSX-FEVER in them...

Together we've decided to build a some very HIGH-QUALITY games for the MSX. Stepping in where Konami left off...(YES we aim HIGH !)
We call ourselves: RyJuZo (which ofcourse contains the letters of our names haha)

To build these amazing games we've build the following tools (already):

- A very advanced cross-assembler. We lovingly call it RyJuZo's MSX-DeveloperStudio (dtm.ryan-da-bass-man.com/ryjuzomsxdev.jpg)

- A slightly modified version of BlueMSX with an enhanced debugger and vram-viewer

- A multi-purpose gfx tool, which contains a screen 5 gfx editor/tiles converter, a map-editor , a palette designer and a sprite creator(dtm.ryan-da-bass-man.com/multitool.jpg)

- A TRUE (Konami-song) Tracker, which can not only play all KONAMI'S song's and sfx's but create them as well !! dtm.ryan-da-bass-man.com/scctrck.jpg)

what do we still have to do before we enter the competition:

- Create a screen1 (multi-color-patterned) gfx editor (because the competition demands msx1-specs...sadly)

And what is the game going to be...well... it's going to be the TRUE sequel to KnightMare 2....
because we feel Shalom (aka Knightmare 3 did not do it for US !) sooo we're proud to introduce...

KnightMare III - Raziël's Revenge

The Story:

**************

After defeating Galious in the final battle...Peace seemed to return to the lives of Popolon and Aphrodite and baby Pampers.
But no..this was sadly not the case because the oldest son of Galious....a demon named RAZIËL ...
more EVIL than his father ever was , seeked revenge !
Raziël managed to create CHAOS in the kingdom by unleashing all his lower demons to create havoc among the people...
so Popolon went to aid his people against these demons...leaving Aphrodite and baby Pampers all alone...
Raziël managed to sneak into the castle and cast a powerfull spell on Aphrodite and baby Pampers....
Which caused their hearts to turn into STONE ! Being without love in their hearts...Popolon find's himself more and more alone...
So after visiting with the great mage of the kingdom for advise , Popolon learns about the existence of the beautiful red dragon diamond...
This diamond was created by very powerful demons and contains the blood of the great dragons. Which contains great magical healing powers...This diamond could restore the love in the hearts of his loved ones...
Raziël ofcourse expected this and ordered his most powerfull demons to guard the path leading to the whereabouts of the red diamond...
Popolon determined to free the hearts of his loved ones sets off on a journey in search of the red diamond...

**************
This game will be something like the first knightmare but now scrolling in ALL directions. The enemie's will be smart. And ofcourse with lot's of great GIANT bosses to battle.
We wanted to combine this with some platform action but we believe this will exceed the size set by the competition.
So we will release another game after this one but then for the MSX2 and above (hopefully the msx-dev will pump up their specs by then...so we could enter it again...)

We could always use some great tunes for the game..so if you think you have something sounds like it should be in the game then let me know...

Our goal is to revive the MSX once again....because we believe MSX is forever....!!!

Welcome, that must be the biggest first-post ever.

As for gfx, you mentioned screen 1, why not try screen 2? You'll have more color and you can still work with tiles/characters. Search MRC for 'polka', and you'll find a screen 2/4 tile editor by me. It may be a bit unusual at places, but it works alright. I've done 3 games with it so far..

As for title: Konami also released Knightmare 3, being 'Shalom'. So, I dunno if you knew about that, or whether you simply want to make an alternative story following K2 (MoG) .. (edit: ok, I was obviously a bit too sleepy last night )

How old are your kids (at least the ones cooperating)?

btw, "away from the MSX-scene for over 25 YEARS!!!" ? Have you been in an MSX-'scene' before the standard was conceived?

the last time I worked on an msx before this year was in 1984...on my Daewoo msx 1(I still have it...)

so that is about 25 or rather 24 years or so...
my boys are 12 and 13...I myself was 10 when I started to program on the msx...

and when I say screen 1...I mean the same screen konami used for Galious...maybe that's your screen 2 I dont know.
But I will certainly check your editor if I can find it....it would certainly save us some time...

greetzzzz

All those Konami games are screen 2 afaik. Screen 2 in MSX-BASIC may appear to be a slow freehand drawing screen, but that's really MSX-BASIC trying to mimic this. In the end it's all patterns..

Is there any chance of getting that tracker? It would be nice to have a look at it.

So, what did you do on your MSX in 1984, and why did you already quit in the same year? ;-)

Are the modifications available?

Anyway, good luck with your game!

In 1984 I already programmed the Hell out of it back then. My father was also a programmer (mainframe and 8086). He taught me everything...and he also built the tools I needed like assembler etc. And yes at the at the end of that year I got my first 80286 so that's why I moved on...but I never forgot the fun I had on my msx....that's why I never got rid of it.

And as for the modified version of BlueMsx, I believe I'm not allowed to release a modified version to the public according to the agreement. But I'll have to check ...

All the tools will be released to public after the completion of the first game...

We want to beat the competition first...hehe

Most of it is GPL, graphics are 'free for non-commercial use'. I don't know the license of the romdatabase, trainers, manual, etc. It's safe to release bluemsx.exe + debugger.dll, including the source code you've modified. We might even add your changes to the official release

Welcome back to the dev scene. I wish you good luck for MSXdev'08 and congratulations for starting with such an ambitious project. Hopefully we will witness high level entries this year too.
