Strange, here even on Windows98 the webstart works without a problem... and it works also on XP for me.

Is it a problem with webstart itself, like no Java program runs opening from the internet, or with JEmu2 in particular?

Hmmm... since it failed to download, are you sure you don't have a firewall blocking it?

Exactly my thoughts...

What java version are you running on?

Pretty fat chance that your Java is too recent. If I remember correctly, Java 1.6 (Java 6, sic). Most (web)apps that I have seen have been written for Java 1.4. Under 1.5 (5, sic!) some of them will do the job, others don't. With the coming of Java 1.6 I presume that more and more (web)apps will fail due to deprecated and/or obsoleted library calls.

Nah, JEmu2 works fine on Java6. It even works on Java7 nightly builds.
I've actually very rarely seen older java stuff fail on Java6.

I'm running Java 6. Which ports should be opened then? And then again: my firewall doesn't block outgoing requests....
Note that with a toolie like wget, I can download the file (mentioned in the error dialog) fine... Maybe Java has somehow no rights to download files!?

Could you try going to the control panel -> Java -> General -> Network Settings and select 'Direct Connection'?

I changed the setting from "Use browser settings" to "Direct connection" and it didn't make any difference.

Try at least once to run it with the firewall disabled and see if it works - if if does, then it's a matter of finding on your firewall how to unblock stuff (or for it to ask you to allow or deny access when a program tries to access the internet)

But what version of java are you running exactly? ('java -version' on the command line)
There has been a bug in some public beta version of Java6 that could cause this, but that has been fixed a long time ago.

You could also try to clear your jws cache (control panel > java > general > temporary internet files > settings > delete files... tick both checkboxes)

...and what SLotman said

My firewall honestly doesn't block any access to the outside. Never had any problems with it as well. Besides, I can download it fine with wget, so that can't be the problem, really.

I'm running OpenJDK 1.6.0 now, but the same happens with Sun Java 6 update 7.

I cleared the cache. Still doesn't work.

Hmmm, it's strange...
Do you have problems with other jws applications such as http://www.puppygames.net/applets/droidassault.jnlp too?
