AFAIK, you could use sd_snatcher`s ExecROM tool to run (obviously) .ROM files and they will use an SCC cart that's on 2nd slot.
- oh, wait a minute -
I would need also a megaram, right? So, no more slots.
I think that, by far, the best companion slot for this SD, or even for the Sunrise CF/IDE, would be a megaram cart along with an SCC chip. Or, the SD cart with the actual SCC chip.
Otherwise, it should get really complicated to run SCC games...
Any ideas?
Erikie, it's not possible to create the definitive MSX cart: SD, SCC and Megaram?
I'm sure some Brazilians could provide the schemes for building a megaram...

muffie, provide some tens of SCC chips for appropriate price and I believe you won't wait long for your dream device.
As for MegaRAM, I'd like to know how much can RAM add to the cost of the device.

I was just discussing that with Bifi.
Scares me ppl destroying original carts to take SCC chips. So, unless someone came with the idea of producing VHDL scc chips, the best idea would be an SD cart along with Megaram.
Using that cart + ExecROM + an SCC cart on 2nd slot, would be nice.

it certainly works best to have an scc flash device at hand for roms. I have several (ese-scc and megaflashrom)
The good thing of the SD device is that you can use a fat32 2gb card to transport files from PC to MSX |

hmm, makes me thinking if it would be possible to have 2 flash roms on this device.
and a switch so you can see it as 1 big flash rom of 1Mbyte so you can flash the 2nd 512K
and then switch off the msx and flip a switch on the device so only the 2nd flash device is used for playing games
there is more than enough room in the cpld to built in extra logic for mapping but I need to experiment with 2 flash roms to make something work like this. Anyone have ideas how to add a second flash rom so we can flash that without problems? |

-oh, wait another minute-
I forgot that this product already have a dual logic: Floppy and ROM emulation, right?
So, tell me if I'm wrong, it should only be a matter of converting ExecROM scc on different slot logic to your loader? And then, we could have (with no further mods) MG2 with SCC running on it (using an scc cart on 2nd slot)?

well it is possible to flash the mmc rom but you cannot do it from the same SD drive.
So you need another option or a second flash rom on the device.
or 2 SD cartridges works also |

I wrote a set of tools that convert the ROM into set of BINs and then into WAV (via MicroWAVer) that you can use via CAS port to fill the flash on SD drive. It sure works, but of course this way is not very convenient.
How about auto-recovery logic that will check on boot the inserted SD card, and if it finds special file (or if some key/switch is on) loads the file or pre-defined sequence of sectors from the card ? This way you won't need additional flash chip.

Erikie, we can't let this post die...
Keep us informed of the changes.
What about cax suggestion for the auto-boot behavior?

I dont think autorecovery logic will work as best option as you need to 'recover' everytime you want to flash another game into the device first.
having 2 flashroms would be easier. Flashroms are not that expensive and adding logic for it would not be too hard.
my first concern is now to get the 'basic' version 2.2 up and running. Still doing some slight modifications before I order.
Keep you posted on the progress. Ordering of the PCBs will probably be beginning of next week

I will order the LCD panel together with a lot of stuff I need from them anyway and see how easy or difficult it would be to add such a display.
Can't be too hard. Would be nice to have such a display in my NMS-8250 where the drives were. As I have none in them anymore. Don't need any drives with the SD device |

Today I sent in the order for the PCBs. With any luck I might even be able to shave off some money from the total costs per interface if there is enough interest and the gold fingers don't add up too much |
