La Valeur - English translation

DJANGO, the well-known serial translator of MSX games strikes again. La Valeur is a quite obscure MSX2 RPG which may be worth having a look at. It features turn-based battles, high-resolution graphics and FM sound support. In 2008, DJANGO already released a partial translation, but now a full translation is available.
You are the hero Alan, who has to rescue Princess Fetisia and find the two Razanium crystals to save the country Vesugar. In order to do this, you will have to face the accursed magician Zanzerian.

The downloadable package contains:

  • Two IPS patches to be used on both gamedisks
  • A data disk with a savefile which gives you level 16
  • Walkthroughs in both English and French
  • A help textfile
  • Lunar IPS, the application with which you can apply the patches

Thanks again to DJANGO, and to you we say: happy gaming!

Dear DJANGO, the Shenan Dragon link on your site gives me Aleste in French (?).

Never heard of this one, but it looks cool! I might have to check it out.

Probably in Japanese, though. Sorry, DJANGO, but since you always try to fit your translations into the same space used by the Japanese, they're always a little too basic -- they tend to lose most of the nuance and natural speech of the original Japanese. And for an RPG in particular, that can really kill the experience.

I love that you produce so many translations, as it shows tremendous dedication on your part. But I'd kind of prefer to see you release fewer translations, but spend more time on each one, expanding the dialogue into something a little more robust in English, as I feel like the experience you're bringing to fans isn't really representative of the original work.

Just my two cents! No offense intended, because again -- like I said -- I really admire your dedication.

-Tom

@Django: Thanks for the translation, great work.
@wyrdwad: I understand what you mean, but realise that doing "authentic" translations takes much more effort, since it will involve not only translating, but re-program the game. For instance, see how long it took the gus from project melancholia with sd-snatcher. Or the guys who translated snatcher. He had to make several helpertools too translate some parts of the game.

For years I've had this silent wish that, at some point, you could select screen-area in openMSX, upload it (a snippet image) to a translation website, and have it translated with OCR-technology.

No idea how realistic this concept really is. Hannibal

@wolf_: Realistic I would say. With the google translate app on the Iphone I can real-time scan an object and see live translation over the original text. When I try it on a picture on a monitor it's also works. But it is far from finished. There needs to be done much more work to get it perect Smile

In some situations I wonder how easy it is to read for a native Japanese. They're quite complex characters and the used resolution is mostly quite low. I can imagine katakana being translated on ocr technology quite easily, but kanji? I don't think the character printed on the MSX screen will be detailed enough to ocr it... I do hope I'm wrong though...

Great release: nice going!

I tried OCR-ing a Japanese manual some years ago; recognition of characters was quite bad especially hand written parts or lower quality parts.
In games with a custom 8x8 font with kanji some of the more elaborate kanji (high stroke count) are mostly filled so individual strokes are hardly visually distinguishable. I doubt OCR-ing those kinds in game kanji would render good results.

But perhaps some day...

Django, any chance of reuploading all your previous translation patches to your site? Or, perhaps you can submit them to our software database so they have a more permanent location?
