Would't be possible to enable extended sprites ? I was almost sure it was possible to have sprite mode 2 also in screen 1.
If not, this option is not appealing at all.

I've just verified that I was wrong, sprite mode 2 is not available in screen 1, with 4 sprites per line this mode is not suitable for this project.
Maybe a more standard solution could be to use 8 pages of screen 4, train the 8 tilesets in the middle and lower part of the screen to show on 8 stripes of 16 pixels. In the upper tilesets would fit the far landscape and its scrolling
what about using screen 4 mode with one bank or two of pattern / attributes? no sprite ghosting on V9938?
Does the "hibrid" mode works in screen 4 like it does on TMS screen 2?
It works without sprite ghosting, but you do not gain extra tilesets because the starting addresses in VRAM for pattern and color definitions and are fixed at 0000h and 2000h in each 16KB page

MegaDrive has the same palette as MSX2 so for the V9938 version it’s a good fit.
Yes the sprite for the car comes indeed from the Megadrive/Genesis version.
But I have slightly modified the color palette to add a shade of red.
I will post a video when there's a little bit more action on screen than just the road rendering. After having worked a lot on technical issues, it felt good to put some gfx on screen, even if it's only for static good looks ...
