The Fantasm Soldier Valis II - English patch

Just a few months ago Manuel Pazos and Theo Wilderbeek joined forces bringing us the Dead of The Brain English and Spanish translation patches. And now they have done it again!

This time is the turn of The Fantasm Soldier Valis II, an MSX2 masterpiece developed by Renovation Game (Nihon Telenet) in 1989, a well-known action side-scrolling platformer featuring great and colorful graphics as well as MSX-MUSIC sound. In contrast to The Fantasm Soldier Valis (1986/MSX1), this second episode includes a more elaborated script with several visual scenes and texts which meant that for non-Japanese speakers it was practically impossible to understand what was going on.

The IPS patch contains:

Texts based on the x68000 English translation by MIJET.
The game has been modified in order to store longer texts in memory and display a bigger text area.
Fixed a bug where the name of the last 3 bosses was incorrect always displaying the name of the first boss.

This patch has been uploaded to our software database.

Hmmm, I can't seem to find the right disk images. What are these checksums? SHA1?

Checksums are from the patched disks and are SHA1.

Aha, thanks... I would have expected to get the SHA1's of the disks to patch.
Anyway, I have found & patched disk 2, 3 & 4. But still haven't found the correct Disk 1.

My first disk has a different SHA1 after patching, maybe copy protection or Savegame ?(Sha1:f876effc6eebec063bad3417ff0fc190d5746bb9)

Yep... That's the same one I get. Anyway, I'll put that version up now on the downloadsite for the people that don't know how to patch.

Thank you very much for your work and for share this patch to everybody. Can you confirm if if this patch is compatible-acumulative with the previous FRS drum kit & enhancement patch (https://www.msx.org/news/en/valis-ii-the-fantasm-soldier-dru...) ? If the answer to my previous question is yes, which must be the order to apply them?

Oh, fantastic! I'll put it on my CF card right away, after I get the answer on raulsantacruz his question, because the R800 support (and drum kit stuff) is very useful in the game.

Nice initiative, I love translations. Games like these really deserve a proper translation and I am happy some msx-fans putting effort in it doing so. Thumbs up!

It seems to work on other versions as well but the end result does not give a sha1 as mentioned in the text file (I tried the version I had, and the 2 versions on tfh/planetemu as well as yours. All end up with a different sha1.

I had not started playing and was indeed wondering if this was one of the games that saves on the game disk. If so then it is likely those saves are the reason.

Valis 2 - English version + Drumkit

99% of this project:

- English Version : Manuel Pazos and Theo Wilderbeek
- Drum kit enhancement: FRS

1% of this project:

- Some routines have been optimized. Now the game will work smoother.
- Turn ON TurboCPU in any machine that has the CHGCPU BIOS and MSX2+ Panasonic.
- Cutscenes will play better with TurboCPU.
- "FM wait" has been accurate for R800 mode.
- Double PSG implemented (autodetect: MegaflashROM SD and reading port 12h)
- Keys at launch:
- SELECT-> 50Hz
- Z-> no Turn ON TURBOCPU
- I-> Immortality (not full)
- D-> force Double PSG

Apply these patches in the same japanese version that were used for english version or directly on the English version.

I love this game and now with English, Drum, enhanced speed , double PSG Etc is a wonderful game.

You achieved to give us the MSX2 best Valis 2 possible experience!!!! Amazing performance in Z80 and R800!. We never believed such kind of optimization was possible with this game because VDP. But you demostrated us there was still a wide room for improvements!! The MSX scene won't can to thanks enough for your works in this mythical game

We're there any changes compared to the beta that AnnK was playing? I don't know how the playability compares to the original version, but the last level was very hard...

Thanks for the updated version. the turbo mode and updated features make it a really good addition and improves the playability! Thanks Victor and again everyone else who worked on the game. Just a translated title screen matching the original style would be my only possible wish for this game. But I already love it.

Too bad that Valis 1 has had a really slimmed down version for the msx. Levels removed or shortened and no demos whatsoever. Otherwise Valis 1 would have been a nice translation project. Even was dumb enough to translate the PC88 demo scripts, but highly unlikely that will get implemented.
