After my previous attempts at creating music for the MSX built in sound chip I felt I had reached just about the end of what I am capable of producing in terms of exploring hardware envelopes and making thick bass sounds.
So I thought: What could be my next challenge?
Well, why not make it even harder? Why not create a song using only two channels? Could be an interesting exercise since 2 channel music is very useful in games since a whole channel then can be reserved for sound effects.
I started by making this interesting hihat handclap groove I discovered while playing around with really short hardware envelopes. I added some arpeggios and bass sounds and realized I had something interesting to build a melody upon.
Then I started out slow with some initial melody and found myself stuck at about 40 seconds. What would I do now? Well, I have always been in love with that fast arpeggio sound that can be heard in International Karate for MSX so I dissected it and made my own version.
Then the rest of the song kindof fell in place by itself. Sure, it's somewhat an orgy in fast arpeggios and very short blips and blops but playing notes fast is a good way to hide that there are few channels to play with.
So here it is:
2CHANNEL
A song that should be possible to play on any standard MSX or better. Using only two channels, no samples or trickery.
I have uploaded it to Youtube so you can see yourself it only uses two channels.
I'm actually quite proud I managed to pull it off.
Happy listening.
