I'm looking for someone on The Netherlands who's willing to upgrade my Carnivore 2 to the latest firmware 2.50? I live in Breda, but I don't mind driving around a bit.
I'll happily pay you for it, or bring you some local beers... or feel free to make your own suggestion. Smile

Puff, for a few beers... almost cheered me up.
I'm too far away, but as advice I would wait for the version to be final. It's still a beta that I know of.
It is really very easy to update with the USB Blaster and it is very cheap bought in China.

I have firmware version 2.40 and Boot Menu 2.41

I live in Madrid, but if you dare to update it, I have no problem explaining it to you, step by step.

It got official today ;-) https://github.com/RBSC/Carnivore2
Maybe I should just get such a cable myself. I might need to do some more upgrades in the future I guess :)

Oh wow, those sets are indeed pretty cheap. You can buy them on Chinese webshops for 2,something Euro. Shipping takes over a month though, so I just spent 7,99 Euro's on Amazon and I will receive it on Tuesday :)
Let's see if we can do this :)

Perfect, if you have any questions I will explain it to you without problems.

You have to install Quartus II v13.0sp1 Web Edition software and you can download it from here: http://fpgasoftware.intel.com/13.0sp1/?edition=web

With that you will have the programmer for the USB Blaster.

Edit:
You may have a problem installing the USB Blaster driver, but when you have it I can explain it to you or search for help on google.
The solution is to install an unsigned driver on Windows 10.

Thanks for the information, I have already updated to version 2.50

Oh, I could've tried this for you, from Hilversum! But honestly, if you have an interface on the way already it is super simple once you've done it at least one time. Just remember to read and follow the instructions! Wink

One thing I can share is that, especially with those cheaper USB blaster clones I've had more consistent success connecting under Linux than Windows. This was before the actual flashing, so there was little risk (just a lot of troubleshooting and annoyance Big smile ). So if you run into a situation where the device just won't connect, even after driver installation on Windows, try Linux if you have that available.

Yes, flash your Carnivore 2 yourself! It's easy and cheaper, and you will able to do it again if another update is released someday. You just need an USB Blaster and solder the JTAG connector. You can use breackable socket to avoid having to unsolder the connector after the update. It's less convenient because you have to be careful that it does not disconnect during the flashing but it avoids damaging the PCB pads when the desoldering. The case does not close with the connector.

Problems you may encounter:

Install the USB Blaster driver in Windows 10:
https://community.intel.com/t5/Programmable-Devices/Windows-...

Give Carnivore2 power to be able to program it, two options.
Use the internal pin with 5v or connect it to the MSX and turn it on to power Carnivore2.

Well, everything to do the flashing arrived last week:

This included 2 FDD cables for my NMS_8250.
But the whole kit came from Amazon:

USB Blaster -> 7,99 Euro
Pin Headers -> 3,35 Euro
5VDC USB Cable -> 6,99 Euro

After installing the required software I was good to go, but I kept running into a problem: The blank-check kept failing. No idea why, but Google tells me this might have something to do with the Altera chip not being 100% (!?!?)
Anyway, since the chip was emptied already and the C2 didn't work anymore, I dedided to skip the blank-checking and to program it without. This seemed to go OK, but ended with a verification error. But still, the C2 now seems to work OK with the new firmware:

And I now have a working 2nd PSG for example:

I did some more testing with various game and stuff and haven't run into any big issues. But I guess the Altera chip on my C2 isn't 100%, although it doesn't seem to break it's functionality.

The FPGA chips used are mostly clones (as original chips are very expensive)

Could this cause the issues I ran into? I bought mine from Maxiol.

Ask Alexey if you can ignore the error.
