Results of the 37th RUMSX GFX Contest

Who doesn't yearn for fresh MSX graphics, preferably given in a weekly dose? Well, have we got a surprise for you! Ever heard of the half-yearly MSX RU (Reunion) which takes place in Barcelona? Well, if not, then now you did. A lot of us couldn't make it to Barcelona, but at least this edition spawned some MSX graphics which we can all enjoy, since a graphics contest was held there.

To be perfectly honest, it was a certain MSX friend who brought this news to our attention. We're talking about someone we don't meet that often in the forums, but still deserves our attention, since this guy obviously knows a thing or two about MSX graphics. His username at MRC is aorante, by the way, in case you'd want to ask for his graphics in order to make a great game, who knows?

Regarding the contest - well, only 3 entries were submitted, but sometimes, you only need so much of something. We're bold enough to say that all three entries really deserve their place; you can judge for yourself - just click the link below.

I liked "Conquista de Sacsayhuaman". It could have been from some 1988-1989 (16-bit) game. (or 8-bit in MSX2 case)

And of course I liked that Viejo´s picture. All characters seem to be from new MSX games (from this millennium, maybe one is from nineties MSX2 game?) though I cannot recognise some of them.

Who is that "fire" haired knight in the middle holding a witch?

Only thing which I do remember about that witch then, is from MSX-1 intro demo from new Goonies game. Can´t be sure though.

That blue and red knight in the back row may be from that Kaos cartridge.

Who is that red robot on the right?

I have no idea where that green ball or green suited boy may appear.

I like that sorrowful face of Ink the Octupus. (or whatever marine species it may be)

Maybe this picture could have been used as a very good advertising material (inside some game, or being a (first) loading screen) in good old days.

Yes MäsäXi. I enjoy making graphics with 16 bit style in msx2 platform. Msx2 has a palette to do incredible scenarios but the speed of copys for the characters are a problem. Best solution is use the gfx9000 card, but who is programming with it?

btw, a nice contest, way to go aorante! I really like guantxip's image, it is a good example of pixel-art mastering. Anyway, congrats to all contestants and hope there will be more at next edition of the contest!

Guantxip, I liked your picture more than you could read from my previous comment. It looks just like 16-bit screenshots from "Fax" pages of Computer + Video Games. (under "Fax" were previews of new games) Your picture gave me feelings of reading those pages in late eighties.

pink haired girl in his arms is from Dahku haven´t played that much...

red spacesuit guy on the right is from Jetpac this looked somehow different so I didn´t recognise him. Actually I recognised that that guy was carrying JETPAC, but it didn´t ring my bells....

But maybe if I should had known it´s a sex toy (...called "Magical Stone") then maybe I should had recognised him as parachuteless joy.... naahhh, real joe is much more uglier (compare game´s title screen) this picture has some "japanese hollywood" version of him...

the green anal sex toy is discomeats NO it´s NOT!! It´s from game called "Magical Stones" by Dioniso. So YOU are using them THAT way!!! YOU PERVERT!!! As it´s square shaped box with sharp edges I could ask that doesn´t it hurt??!?! But I guess that is your POINT!!

Those dishes and brush, I didn´t recognised them as such things at alllll.... Maybe I should do that work more often?

And I didn´t recognise that shadow as A COW! I thought it was that title screen ufo from malaika and thought that maybe some arch enemy is coming down using tractor beam.

And that second picture, it´s well drawn and has 1980´s 16-bit(ch) looks too, but maybe a "bit" too rude for eighties gaming...?
