CEZ/RW joins the competition with a port of Destroyer, a 1980 arcade shooter by Cidelsa, the video game branch of pinball manufacturer Playmatic from Barcelona. This MSX rendition of Destroyer has smooth but challenging gameplay and brings back memories to the glory days of classics like Space Invaders and Galaga. The screen is rotated to accommodate the original size. Now, fire up your Stylus and shoot down some space bugs.

@ syn: So that's what it's called. Big smile When I wrote this newspost, I was thinking "there must be a term for this", and there you have it. Smile

I really like this game, somehow. Seems like a passionate remake of a classic (which I've never heard about, to be honest). Smooth gameplay, but it kinda makes my neck hurt. LOL!

I like the game, very well built, fast and smooth but it´s not easy to play in a non-rotated screen Big smile (an option to rotate for normal monitor would be great)

Sounds like a feature request for emulators thenSmile allow us to rotate the screen!

Heh, we joke a lot here in Brazil about this: "the easiest way to overcome the MSX1 4 sprites per line limitation it's to just turn your monitor 90 degrees"!

Now someone actually did it Smile

The game won't run on a real A1-WX, it´s stuck on the "Testing VDP" screen =(

Tried execrom, odo, loadrom and romload

Just tested on openmsx w/ Panasonic A1-WX emulation. It passes the test screen but the graphics are corrupted =P

The game will only run as ROM. Press DEL to bypass VDP test and maybe the game starts ok.

That means that if you try to load the game in RAM it will not work.
The VDP test only check if your VDP is able to detect 5th sprites in line or sprite overlap. This functions are not too much accurate with some of them.

Thanks for trying the game. Enjoy it as I did developping.

Tested with DEL key to bypass. Now runs nicely.

Well, rotated screen is not a feture as is. That's the way I preferred to show the game in order code as close as possible to the 'playability' of the CIDELSA's original game and trying get a similar look of Galaga or Galaxian with graphics, sounds and game play sweeten a bit.

I hope that turn your TV/LCD or so will be not difficult and enjoy fully the game in your MSX.

Well, my TV is kind of heavy and my monitor has a foot, so I just play it like that. It can be done. Smile

lol I thought this screen orientation was voluntary for a special gameplay...
Like JohnHassink, I can't turn my big CRT monitors but the game stay playable.

I mean the table instead of chair. It seemto be a better solution. Hannibal

Great game when used on tablets !
Just reconfigure the command positions and you get a true arcade

@WYZ:

I thought that only proper way to play this game is to put it to JAMMA-cabinet, but unfortunately while testing I run into troubles... I think you must have some VDP-timing related problems. The board it self seems to be running on TMS9129NL. I think that similar problems may occur on other MSX setups as well running same VDP.

During gameplay there seems to be parts of the ship flying left & right and you can't see enemy bullets. Also There are extra letters flying around etc. Please see the photos:

50Hz??? No way, it's Korean board... *Rechecking* No, you are right... I just took a bad photo... It is TMS9928NL instead. Sorry for mix up, my fault.

I just tested uridium the other day on a PAL MSX (the VDP was replaced with a NTSC one) and that broke the game graphics.

http://www.msx.org/forum/msx-talk/hardware/which-msx1-has-wh...

I suppose this is a similar issue, no ?

(NTSC has a faster raster so there's less time during VBLANK to do stuff with the VRAM)

Wasn't it the other way round? It only worked on PAL, not on NTSC (because of the shorter VBLANK)... So it would be unrelated to this issue, as he is running on PAL.

@NYYRIKKI: Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

I'll reduce writing rate to VPD and sent you a new ROM. This would fix the problem.

Yep, the MSX was originally PAL but I replaced the VDP making it NTSC and that did break the player sprite...

So maybe just the wording I used above was slightly confusing ...
