But there's a much easier way: the BIOS prints the amount of VRAM on the screen at start up. And that's not a fixed string, it's actually detecting and reporting the found VRAM.

Isn't that a bit weird, one screen 7 or 8 page taking only 64KB VRAM? They could have allowed the screen 7 & 8 instructions and just disable SET PAGE for values > 0 ?
This is necessary because each VRAM bank doesn't have enough bandwidth to supply the data to the raster. The VDP then alternates one byte for each bank, doubling the effective bandwidth.
With 64KB of VRAM, there's only one VRAM bank, so it's not possible to have any of the screens that have 64KB pages.
Right now this should match the list on archive.org. I've noticed one difference and that's that the PDF I have of MSX Gids 13 isn't watermarked (it seems to be the same otherwise).
