Turbo R GT Power Supply gone?

Hi,

Today I made a big mistake: I disconnected the 5V extra power to feed my expanders and forgot to connect it again. Then I played a game and left the Turbo R on while being away.

When I came back the Turbo R was dead and the power supply very, very hot. The stuff in the expander drew too much power.

Now, I wonder whether it's really the power supply and if so, can I order a new one which will fit. Preferably a 220V one without needing to solder and stuff. It seems I can easily remove the power supply but where to find a replacement?

Can it also be that something else is gone, like an elco? What is most likely? What should I measure to know what is broken?

Bummer... Hard to say what actually burned down. What does visual inspection reveal? Any deformed/darkened/melted parts? Burning smell from any components? If I remember correctly some transformers had a protection against overheating. When getting too hot they simply stopped working.

Erik Luppes has a guideline for changing the transformers in Turbo R ST. But I am not sure whether this will work for GT version. Here's the link anyway:

In the worst case some components on the board could have been overloaded and stopped working. If those belong to the AC/DC converter circuit, you are lucky. If one of those big chips is broken, I am afraid your machine is a brick...

I see a elco/capacitor next to the big black one that is blue and below it i see some brown transparant substance. It is not fluid but it seems strange there. Hope someone in the neighbored hood can do some investigation for me as I am not that good with electronics.

Is is bulged? Is the top open? If not, it might be glue to keep it attached to the PCB. I once wondered it myself as well with my WXes. It turned out to be brown, aged glue.

The top isn't open. No bulges also. I hope it's the transformer that's gone. If so, it seems I can replace it by a 220V which is better anyway

Hello,
Maybe the 220 to 110 step down converter is broke and you machine is just fine.
Do you have a multimeter? check the voltages of the step-down trafo and then the voltage of the trafo inside your turbo-r.

I had one but can't find the multimeter anymore. I need someone to help me anyway with electronics experience.

It's definately not the step down converter as that functions fine with my FS-A1WX

I found my multimeter and measuring I noticed there was no 2x 12V/14V coming out of the transformer. I also have an additional Turbo R ST and I replaced the transformer in my GT with the one from the ST. And yes, it's working!

So now I am looking for a replacement transformer. Does anybody have one lying around from a defect Turbo R? And otherwise a good replacement 220V to 12V 2x (maybe the one I mention myself above?)?

That's the one in my ST, so I can confirm it's a good (and strong) one.
