In case you want to develop the game further, here's some criticism on the game now that I think I may have reached the first boss twice. Or at least a big enemy that swooped down once in an arc and destroyed my last ship both times.
1) Can the opening spinning coin animation be skipped?
2) The player's hitbox feels too big when it comes to checking collisions with enemy ships, especially the round enemies coming from below in a wave pattern.
3) The player cannot collect the powerups during their invincibility frames, which sounds unusual?
4) Enemies coming from behind rarely are a good idea, I think, especially when they do so without warning.
5) When the player's ship is destroyed, the game over text appears near instantly, which is too fast. Having the game go on for a bit longer would tell the player better their ship had just been destroyed.
Otherwise, the game is very impressive... what I can see of it anyway
Yep, I'm taking note about all feedbacks.
1) The opening spinning coins is like a trademark, like the konami writing scrolling up, like team 17 or digital illusions (ok, I'm exaggerating, I know LoL). A bit of auto celebration... but it runs only once, at first gamestart so, is it so unbearable?
2) well with other enemies it is almost pixel perfect (they are 16x16 pixel less or more full both in x and y). But you are right, round enemies are smaller than other so you need to pay more attention (anyway all objects on screen move more than 1 pixel each frame and they are 50Hz synch, so it doesn't do that big difference 1 or 2 pixels...)
3)yes, he can't. But he is materializing so I think it would be more unusual if he can collide to powerups and he can't collide with enemies... physic jokes apart there are a lot of powerups to supply both difficulty and "damn it! I missed that one!"
4) Don't you ever played at Hype? I think it's strange that enemies don't attack from behind, it is pratically the rule of all conflicts strategy... and, well, this is an old school gameplay. You learn from your faults and by paying attention to the patterns. There are only 5 levels, if you complete the game in a week, is it really a worthy game? How many msx old games did you beat? I think: a lot of level game=more immediate and easy to play, low growing difficulty; few level game=more difficult to grant more longevity...
5) a lot of people asking for it. Probably I add player explosion (in my to do list, big boss explosion enanchement too)
And now, just a little promotion (LoL):
Donations are really appreciated (paypal on thegeps at gmail dot com)
Everyone who donate can write me at the same email address and will be rewarded with the secret codes to enable the 3 secrets of the game:
Music test (to listen songs without sfx interferences)
Ship selection (to play the game using some of classic MSX shot'em'up spaceship: Zanac, Twinbee, Hype, Star Soldier, Star Force)
Cheats (invulnerability all time long + max weapon power)
Obviously those codes are provided from the game for free by beating it. So if you complete the game, after epilogue and credits sequence you'll receive a code. If you insert received code BEFORE starting a new play and you succeed on complete it you'll receive the next code. Order of reception is the one I give you earlier: music, ship, cheats. So, beat the game and receive music test code. Insert it, play and beat the game and receive ship selection code. Insert it, beat it again and receive cheat code. Obviously you have to insert code again of you are beaten...
Someones could help me to run the game via SofaRun (V.7) + MFRSCC+SD? or via MFRSCC+SDD & OPFXSD?
I use MSX Turbo-R ST
Thanx!
You need to set ASCII16 mapper and disable drives
You need to set ASCII16 mapper and disable drives
Tried.....but no luck
what am I doing wrong?
Try to disable FM PAC. The game uses only the PSG and probably FM PAC uses RAM
just tried on file-hunter (web msx) and it works only in PAL mode (selecting msx turbo r Europe PAL, I know it doesn't exist) so try to force PAL mode if it is possible
While I understand your feelings towards your boot presentation, I also relate to those that complain because it takes too much time to be able to start the game. So, being able to skip it with keyboard or joystick input would make it more enjoyable, while on the other hand probably not much people will have the patience to watch it to the end... For sure, your choice, your game, just my 2 cents on why people are probably complaining, even though it is something just after loading the game the whole presentation take quite some time, I've counted about half a minute...
ok, I'll manage to make it skippable...
Ok, just to understand each other... I am good enough on gaming but I thnk I am in a middle range. Here's a complete run of Freedom Fighter level 1
I thought msxers were harder (like me! ).
Just make your best, give it all you have and you will do it better than me!!!
