And I should be playing Shalom this week, ready for Sunday 30th May. I've never played this one before so I'm really looking forward to it, though I can't see it topping Maze Of Galious.
Despite being familiar with its fantastic music for much longer, I also played Xak for the first time only a few years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I don’t really remember the grind bothering me much, but then again I often enjoy that in a game personally. I want to play the sequels too definitely. Back in the days I did play Fray, which I remember fondly.
Looking at your screenshots, it looks like the monitor’s colour mask is not quite able to keep up. That could account for some of the game’s graphical details being hard to read. Since the game uses the high-resolution screen mode 7 (512x212), not all monitors are able to display it sharply. For example the Philips CM 8833 can, but the Philips CM 8802 can not. E.g. 80 columns text is also a bit hard to read on the latter. I wonder what monitor you used? Since Xak II and Tower of Gazzel use screen mode 5 (256x212), I would expect they should work better for you.
Interesting. I use a Sony PVM-9042QM for the MSX and have generally never had a problem.
I do also own a Philips CM8833-II for my Amiga. I'd have to buy an adapter for that to work with anything else but it might be worth a shot. I actually prefer it to the PVM.
