Why didn't Konami release a Jail Break version for the MSX, but did for the C64, Spectrum and Amstrad?

That arcade game is "C" tier stuff at best, it was largely unknown in JPN or the US.

Probably by the time the European home computer conversions came out, it wasn't worth (economically) to publish on MSX a semi unknown game.

Btw. Many (semi-famous) Konami arcade games from '85~'87 weren't ported to MSX:
Iron horse, Finalizer, Scooter Shooter, Double dribble, Jackal, Combat school

Also costs for release on MSX would be higher. The releases on the C64 a.o. were tape based, most likely produced in Europe. For MSX the carts would have been costlier than tape and would have been produced in Japan adding shipping costs and delay. To do such a release you would need to know how many copies to produce up front, mistakes in that estimation lead to more delays (if the game sells out) with the added frustration to customers, or you end up with a stock pile of unsold carts. Tapes were cheap to produce and extra tapes could be produced quickly if demand was high (although I suspect it wasn’t at the time for this game).

Work did start on Jail Break. The MSX port was even announced in several magazines and is referenced in the manual of the ZX Spectrum version. As far as I know, Konami wasn't happy with the quality of Greet Beret (which was developed in England as well) and halted the development.

And apperently the games Pentarou mentions aren't that 'hot', since none attempted to make a msx version of them.

Why not release these games on tape?

Hi it´s funny... but someting come back to my memories..

By 1985-86 I was lucky to live in Madrid just nearby the only Official licensed Konami-Shop in whole Europe and not sure if by coincidence or by chance but on top of all the Konami MSX related stuff that was on sale at that Store, there were 2 Konami Arcade machines for Demo purposes, and gess what.. the 2 games that were installed on those 2 Arcades were: Double-Dribble and JAIL BREAK !!! which of course both of them were NOT available in MSX format...

Strange things back on those days....

Regs!

MajorTOM, please go back in time and take pictures of the Official Konami Shop. That sounds like it would've been a magical place to visit and now I wanna know more about it!

INDEED it was like a piece of Heaven on Earth :-) I went there each and every Day after my school lessons !!
The look&feel of the Shop it self was a full Konami-branded Store... imagine a current Apple Store but a Konami one !!
It was managed by a Spanish company SERMA I guess through some kind of Master Franchiser contract or so..

There were something like 6 demo-stations all with a MSX2 SONY HB-F9S + SONY CRT Monitor where you could ask the Store manager to test any konami cartridge they have on stock

The games porfolio started with SUPER COBRA (as the oldest availabel tittle in the shop) and all the way up to the SALAMANDER, which was in fact the very last tittle introduced before the store had to close due to the Software Piracy Crisis in our market) remember Spain stood for the record of >90% of total Computer Software sold was pirated...!!

The exact location of the Store was this one KONAMI SHOP of course the current "White" showmirror was fully ORANGE Official Konami branded guidelines at that moment...

Hope I could travel on time back to that moments of my childhood!!

This is a screenshot from a fan-made MSX version of Jail Break, unfinished unfortunately. Jon Cortázar has been working on this for a while.
