V9990 is not part of MSX

Even if the MSX3 is not compatible with the V9990 (and even if the MSX3's slot rejects the V9990 cartridge), there is no problem. Except that some zealots will be disappointed.

Sorry but only a zealot can say that. Because only a zealot is ready to accept anything as long as he is told that it is a new product. Some Apple fans are like that. And worse, they make remarks like you to those who report what does not suit.

I'm a MSX fan and I was sure that the V9990 would not be reproduced by the Nishi's machine. It has no reason to do that. It was obvious. Maybe others can do it someday. By cons I will probably not accept that the cartridge adapter is not standard. Moreover, I'm also not convinced by the "MSX3" cartridge for several reasons, in particular its design which seems to me not suitable to the use (some connectors are badly placed). I hope it's just a prototype and will be redesigned.

I do not support all of Nishi's ideas, but I believe he is right that V9990 should not be officially supported.

After +30 years from the last MSX, the Turbo R, I feel that MSX3 is going to be something completely new. Most probably is going to be a RPi 400 like computer using apart FPGA to enable background compatibility. But Nishi doesn't have in mind to provide full compatibility with all that happened from last MSX (Turbo R) to now (9990, OPL4, etc), it's more like "a new commercial MSX".

Let's see the final product.

gdx, the madscient opinion is probably also motivated by the fact that just few users (particularly one) were pushing, even treating Nishi rudely and with a total lack of respect, that the V9990 must be part of the MSX3. It's surprising how just one person can damage the image of the (Spanish) MSX scene worldwide. Unfortunately this doesn't help and creates a false image of us. It's a shame.

If you really need an old-fashioned V9990, you can make a video downgrade adapter for the MSX3.

I think it doesn’t matter all, as long the new msx3 is backwards compatible that would be very nice! I think we all love MSX standards, as we all use it! The question is what is the goal of the new MSX3? Is it to make a new MSX based on the history or is it a completely new design for future kids like us?

To be honest, I don't really like Nishi as a person, but I think he deserves respect for his work. (By the way, I am on a mutual block with him on Twitter ;-)

A priori, this will be the case for software only.

A downgrade adapter would rather be an adapter that cannot run all MSX cartridges (V9990 includes). Wink
