I've heard rumours of NEW MSX hardware... A Colecovision/MSX 2 type machine I've heard may be produced by OPCODE games ?? And a Brazilian company making an MSX 3 ... but where are they ?? *** Does anyone know when this new hardware will materialize?? **

Hi Harry,

As you may have noticed, it's been a while since there's been anything like a consumer market for MSX computers. In the early 2000's MSX creator Kazuhiko Nishi attempted to resurrect the platform, and managed to produce some thousand units of the FPGA-based 1chipMSX. Unfortunately the 1chipMSX sold poorly, and the whole Nishi-led initiative fell apart soon after.

Since then MSX development has been restricted to hobbyist groups doing work in their spare time. This means there is usually few updates or hard deadlines to speak of. If you watch the forums and news you'll find interesting projects from time to time (such as 1chipMSX clones or the Mini IQ3000), but there's usually no telling what will come out when.

No. Exactly 5000 units were produced, and they sold out.

...for reasons that have nothing to do with the number of 1-chip-MSX units sold.

That's not what I've heard, but anyway – the point remains that MSX hardware development has been taken over by hobbyists, who by definition are not very worried about press releases or launch deadlines. Therefore releases are few and far between.

they did get sold out, but it took more than 2 years. (longer, if you include the pre-order date)
