Hi all,
i'm new on this forum and i would like to config this emulator in order to discover msx games Smile
I downloaded the latest version and then i downloaded the latest cbios pack (0.29a).
I put all the "cbios_*.rom" to share/systemroms path.
Then i downloaded a couple of zip roms (metal Gear and Metal Gear 2) and i put them in the same folder.
I started the emulator and i selected one game and it appears "Errorexecuting hot keycommand: No such device [MEtal Gear]. And there is a loading time: https://i.postimg.cc/Cxr3g3Dt/IMG-5485-Copia.jpg

I have another issue: how can I configure the joypad?

thank ypu very much!

First of all: you do not need to download C-BIOS separately, it is included in openMSX.

It is no use to put game software in the share/systemroms folder. If any, put it in the share/software folder.

Some questions I have:
- How did you select the game?
- Can you open the console and run 'bind' and tell me what it shows?
- What do you mean with "there is a loading time"?
- What exactly do you want to configure for the joypad? (Do you mean a joypad on our PC?)

hi,

ok, i extracted again the .zip file of openMSX, without adding anything.

here my answers:
1) Menu --> Load ROM --> I selected the game in the folder where i saved it
2) i'm sorry...how can I run it? I open the console and i can see the "Menu" tab. How can I run "bind"?
3) I don't know if it is a loading time. I see a times that starts from 0:00 and go ahead...
4) Yes, a wireless joypad. Is it possible?

Now if I load a game, it will continue to flicker this screen: https://i.postimg.cc/85mkT4B3/Immagine.png But the game doesn't starts.

Thank you

1. OK, that's good
2. You can open the console with F10.
3. It's not a loading time. It's the reverse bar. You can use it to jump back in time. Ignore it for now
4. The basics should work out of the box, if you insert the joystick into the MSX. You can use the menu for that (Hardware -> Connectors -> MSX Joystick Port A)

What file exactly did you try to load? Was there something appearing on the screen when you did?

3) ah ok
4) ok! it works

Probably i had a corrupted rom. Now i tried several others roms and they works!! The roms that don't works are games in .dsk format. If i trey to load them, the openMSX open a list mapper...it doens't start the game...is it normal? Probably the .dsk format isn't supported?
I mean games like Aleste Gaiden, Space Manbow,Yuurei Kun. Mr Ghost ...

thank you!

A .dsk is not a ROM but a floppy disk image. You need to put them in the disk drive. Note that the C-BIOS machines do not have a disk drive, so you need to install system ROMs of real machines and run one of these.

A corrupted ROM does not explain the error message you got. So, I'm still very interested on how you got that error message, because it looks like a bug. Can you please try to reproduce it and then tell me exactly how I could reproduce it as well?

So it means that i need to look for different format for these gmes: aleste gaiden, psycho world, space manbow, Yuurei Kun. Mr Ghost?
It's strange because it seems that these games are only available in .dsk format...

Unfortunately in order to reproduce the error i need the rom that didn't work...but i deleted it yesterday and i don't remember where i found it Sad

No, it means you should emulate a different MSX machine, one that has a disk drive. See also https://openmsx.org/manual/faq.html#rundiskstapes

A pity you lost that ROM. If you ever find it back, or remember the exact file name, please tell me.

Yeah i found 2 games of 4 in .rom format, and they works obviously! Now i only need Aleste Gaiden and Psycho World, they aren't available in .rom format Sad
I read the guide, but it isn't explained how i can emulate them...do I need a new bios file in order to run these .dsk image with OpenMSX

Yes sure if i will found again that rom i will keep you updated!
thank you!

As I said, I did not suggest to find the same games in 'another format'.

The MSX is a standard of computers. So there exist many models that implement this standard. In openMSX you emulate a specific MSX machine. By default, you emulate a machine that doesn't really exist, but does have free-to-spread BIOS. It's called C-BIOS. That machine does NOT have a disk drive, so it will not be possible to run disk software on that machine.

By installing BIOS ROMs of other machines, you can also emulate these other MSX machines. Several of them have a disk drive. E.g. the Panasonic FS-A1FX. Emulate such a machine in openMSX to be able to use disk images (.dsk files).

I hope with this information, the FAQ and manual text is a bit clearer.

A hint about the system ROM files: http://www.msxarchive.nl/pub/msx/emulator/openMSX contains an interesting zip file. The manual explains exactly where to put them.

thank you! I downloaded the zip files. Unzipped it and there is a systemsroms folder. Inside there are 3 folders: extensions, machines, misc.

I suppose that i have to:
1) copy the files inside the extensions folder and paste them in the extensions folder in my OpenMSX installation folder
2) copy the files inside the machines folder and paste them in the machines folder in my OpenMSX installation folder
3) copy the misc folder and paste it in my OpenMSX installation folder

Am i right? Thank you very much for your help! I read the manual but i can't find where i have to exactly put these files..
