At the ending, it says the reason:

"The jewel is a SWITCH, so in order to prevent it from being used, it was divided into four parts and then sealed."

"Isn't that stupid?!"

So, yep, it's a MASOCHIST game.

Hence why I was wondering if they were trying to go for some dark comedy in the ending. The ending indicates a downer, yet the music sounds so happy and cheerful.
