I present our new project, which is almost finished (it will take 3 or 4 weeks more):
"Sector 88" is a side scroll shooter for msx2 with rpg elements (earn money destroying enemies and completing missions, buy upgrades for your ship, etc.).
This is an experimental game because it is the first game where I ever used hardware sprites (which I make in msx, pixel by pixel and it is f..ing difficult), and pre-rendered graphics in PC and converted to msx and then, retouched and processed.
This game does not pretend to be anything exceptional, it's just the result of having achieved (finally) to make a smooth scroll in turbo-basic (basic kun, XBasic ...) and to do some practice with sprites by HW. Now I will be able to make more elaborated games in the future (contra or castlevania kind of game, with smooth scroll, or perhaps a “life on mars 2” with smooth scroll).
Anyway the game is very replayable and full of options.
-earn money by killing enemies or completing missions
-purchase upgrades for your ship: laser, speed, shield, missile power, missile speed.
- repeat missions as many times as you want to earn more money
-Explore the sector and discover the plot of the game.

The soundtrack is mainly composed by John Hassink, and is still in progress (bgm’s in the video will be improved).

Arturo Ragozinni will attempt to insert sampled sound effects for the FM version.

Moonsound bgm and sound effects will cause an evantual flickering of the scroll on msx2 since the driver is very CPU consuming and distorts the scroll sincronyzation (just a little bit). This does not happen with FM/Music module or with a panasonic 2+ or turbo-r

The game will be released in the following formats:
-Digital (ROM file to flash it in a flash cartridge)
-Digital (Loose files for installation on any mass storage device such as a hard disk, sd, micro-SD, compact flash, etc.
-Physical, in 3.5” Diskettes to be installed on a mass storage device such as a hard disk, sd, micro-SD, compact flash, etc.
-Physical, micro-SD cards / SD to be executed directly into a card reader for MSX, or to be installed in your usual card.
Physical, cartridge (I do not know the exact date when it will be available but I estimate that in about one month, but it is not up to me.

Prices are:

Digital: 12 euros
Floppies: 17 euros (+ shipping)
Sd / micro-SD: 19 euros (+ shipping)
Cartridge: 42 euros (+ shipping)

Again, I ask for the support of the community to finance this project, which will take about 3 weeks more approx.
I need to raise money to buy the material physical formats, and I would also appreciate the pre-purchase in digital format since I need to eat and I have to change my car’s battery...

For those who purchase the game in advance, there is a 3 euro discount:

Digital: 9 euros
Floppies: 14 euros (+ shipping)
Sd / micro-SD: 16 euros (+ shipping)
Cartridge: 39 euros (+ shipping)

Besides, the names of the sponsors will appear in the game (either in the manual or in the final credits) if they want (it is optional).

I leave you a video link of the gameplay where I begin with some improvements (missiles and shield) and some unlocked missions

https://youtu.be/wv8IDLR4d1c

PLEASE SELECT THE "720P HD 60" OPTION IN YOUTUBE TO SEE THE VIDEO AT 60fps, OTHERWISE THE SCROLL WILL NOT BE SMOOTH.
The MRC video replayer does not have the 60FPS option and the video will be shown at 30fps. Please click on the youtube button at the bottom right part of the video window to watch it at 60fps.

Damn, this game looks gorgeous! Perhaps a little TOO gorgeous for a Japanese MSX2+ with 64kb RAM, though -- I assume it would run significantly slower on my system than in the linked YouTube video, no?

Either way, definitely interested! Will probably drop you an email shortly. Wink

What a great job.
I do not understand fully how many stages and all the features of the game, but ... It does not matter.
I have just sent to you my money!
It is my second game from you after Life on mars (that i have not finished yet due lack of time)
But i believe in your job and in digital releases for my MFRSCCSD512.
Now i will leave for holidays with my wife and my 2yearsold daughter, but when i will be back it would be a pleasure to play your last game.
See you soon

I would move to c to gain a better control of the machine.
With the same effort you can fully use the 64kb of ram and 128kb of vram.
Manually controlling the ram mapper allows the use of the extra ram.
You can include asm versions of the music anf sfx player
But I know how hard is to change one 's own habits
Anyway greetings, the results are already astonishing.

Looks awesome...
but
to be honest, the gameplay looks a bit simple (the asteroids part looks just plain boring)
of course i have not played the game yet but i would like to buy a game which is more intresting to actually play instead of a game that looks good but is not fun to play

If your msx2+ is a Panasonic with turbo, the game will run exactly like in the video. If it is not, it will run just like on msx2: like in the video, but it will slow down a little bit when several enemies appear on the screen (like in space manbow, aleste... and any msx2 smooth shooter)

Email recieved, thanks!

Thank you for your feedback.
The game is under developement yet. I am creating more hardware sprites and implementing more enemies.
The asteroid mission starts with only avoiding asteroids and further on you will have to avoid enemy ships, missiles, and probably space mines. The whole stage is not meant just to be evading asteroids.

Regards!
