The PC Engine is a 16 bit system and has (much) better sprite capabilities, so If we could get something that even *looks* like that version, that would be fantastic.

Sure Megadrive and PC Engine are much capable but we can't use any 8-bit version of OutRun as an example beacause they are all garbage (I don't even consider the Master System one a good port of the arcade).

I would class pc engine as a 8 bit console.

Work is still in progress.

I'm working on the sprite management, specifically on an engine for all sideroad decor (palm trees, billboards, traffic signs ...).

how much sprites/scanline are you planning to use? Is there a room for two paired cars on the road?

Here is my current sprite budget :
. 6 for the main car
. 12 for other cars on the road (it allows 3 cars, or 1 car and 1 truck)
. 14 for the roadside decor

I have not yet went through the problems of limitations per scanline, but they will need to be adressed, as some areas will be problematic. The bottom of the screen, for instance, where all three families of sprites will meet. There, I will have to make a decision between showing incoming cars or the sideroad decor. Being a game about passing and overcoming cars, and having to show some precision driving at some time, it seems to me natural that the incoming cars will have priority over decor.
