MGSP v2.0.0 a new music player by HRA! | MSX Resource Center

During the height of the MSX standard in Japan, one of its most interesting features was the musical capabilities. Consequently, with the different soundchips available, the first Japanese music file formats emerged on the scene such as MGS, OPX, BGM (MuSICA) or MPK. Over the years everything suggest that for Japanese MSX community the MGS file format has become the defacto standard for musical purposes, the proof are their most recent music compositions, so what a better gift than a new player adding new features and adapted to the modern era!

MGSP is a new MGS file player developed by the Japanese user HRA! which resembles the well-known MGSEL 3.01 player by Ain. Notice that this is not an upgrade of Ain's player but a similar player with some differences. The system requirements are:

MSX, MSX2, MSX2+ or MSXturboR
MSX-DOS2 or NextorDOS
MGSDRV v3.20 or later (Versions older than v3.20 have not been tested.)
MemoryMapperRAM 224KB (DOS TPA 64KB, MSX-DOS2/Nextor 64KB, MGSDRV 32KB, MGSP KFONT 64KB)

It also implements Kanji font and joypad control.

It looks really great. It is a pity that the MGS driver doesn't install correctly on many configurations. Uninstallation is also problematic.

The MGSDRV 3.20 refers to FFF7h as the slot for the MAIN-ROM. However, this value is a work area that has been added since MSX2.
To solve this, we provide MAINROMP.COM.
This is a patch program that simply copies the contents of FCC1h to FFF7h when it detects that it is MSX1 (no ExtROM is present).
On MSX1, you can run MAINROMP.COM and then MGSDRV.COM /Z to install it in memory.

Thank you, I replaced 3A F7 FF by 3A C1 FC at 1FE3h in the MGSDRV.COM and it works on my MSX1 now.
Just a fix for the uninstallation and all will be perfect!

In the latest 2.1.0alpha, it is no longer necessary to pre-install MGSDRV; just place MGSDRV.COM, MGSP.COM, and KFONT.BIN in the same directory and run MGSP to start it.

According to the specs it should work but in my MSX (MSX2+ with 512Kb and MFR SCC + SD) it hangs when is loading Kanji font. Did someone try it?

Please, Pac, try to rename or delete the "MGSP.INI" file.
It should work fine.

Please I would like to able select the files also with the joystick and that the file name is displayed when the cursor moves.

Joystick is supported from the beginning.

The A button, B button is the position of the shift key.
For statements like A + xx, feel like holding down A and pressing xx.

UP : File selection bar to the top
DOWN : File selection bar down
LEFT : Go to one of the top directories
RIGHT : Play songs in the file selection bar position / Go to Directory
A + UP : Page up
A + DOWN : Page down
A + LEFT : Volume reduction
A + RIGHT : Volume increase
B + UP : Increased number of loops
B + DOWN : Loop count reduction
B + LEFT : Stop playing the song while it is playing
B + RIGHT : Re-play an already loaded song from the beginning
A + B + UP : Exit
A + B + DOWN : Fade out
A + B + LEFT : Sort the song list by directory entry
A + B + RIGHT: Sort the song list by song title

Sorry for the joystick. I must have used the wrong controller when I tested. I have two same, one connected to the PC and the other to the MSX.

I think it's better to unified the keys usage with the joystick usage. So Play/Stop music (and also open the file) is better with the SPACE key. LEFT/RIGHT could be used to play the next music of opened file if present (and back to the first when it's the last). UP/DOWM to go to the next file. The button 2 + a direction can be used for some other basic commandes like the volume.

This would reduce the number of keys to assign and simplify use.

I'm sorry.
The new keymap has already been finalized and there is no uniformity between the keyboard and joypad.
I'm currently focusing on debugging v2.1.0.

If no v2.1.0 bugs are found for a few days, we will upgrade it to the official version.
After the next ROM version is created, the development of MGSP will be completed and we will return to the development of 1chipMSX-Kai.

(1) Fixed a bug that caused runaway when moving to a directory when all song title data had not been read (the number is displayed in the upper right).

(2) Changed to return to the first song after playing the last song in the list

I took the time to test MGSP Version 2.1.2R building from source.
It works like a charm in openMSX 17.0 but I cannot make it work on a real hardware: a Panasonic FS-A1ST turboR.
Can anybody help me? This is the ASC8 Ascii8kB ROM I created with HRA! tools.

Here is the picture of my shining Windows 11 gear with openMSX 17.0 .

I have a Repro Factory ASC8 FlashROM cartridge that I program. I tried with that one with no luck.
I also have a RBSC multimapper FlashROM v3.0 , i didn't tried with that one yet.
Programming sw is FL by gdx.
